Well, I've been wondering, for the SI members old enough to have gone to work, what were the worst jobs you ever had?
Here's mine: I was working at a Haunted House in Armada, Michigan called "Slaughter at Sundown", specifically as the central attraction in their "Devil Room" (Chosen because I'm 6', 6" and 350 lbs.). This place was shoddily constructed (Literally, they used a barn for the haunted house itself), and was in clear violation of several fire codes (And yet they're still in operation today... Go figure). The costume sucked, the mask kept shrinking with every breath from the moisture on my breath and the sweat to the point at the end of the night the mask was literally skin tight. I got fired on the opening night because, and I quote: "You aren't scaring the customers." This was told to me after biking 45 minutes to the place, and screaming myself hoarse at the customers for five hours. I actually lost my voice for the first twenty minutes after we got off, and the other employees had to fetch me several drinks and cough drops before I could bitch out the boss that obviously she couldn't hear me over a local radio station that had been on-site, and the fact that the other people working in the room confirmed that not only was I scaring the customers, I had literally caused two people to wet themselves in fear. Not only was I fired, but they only paid me for half the night. So, yeah... I biked an hour and a half, lost my voice, and suffered one of the worst costumes in Halloween history all for thirty bucks that was promptly stolen out of my pocket before I left the fucking parking lot. If I had been in a more vengeful mood, I not only would have reported them to the proper authorities, I would have firebombed the place to the ground. I did get some revenge, however. I got a job at another haunted house a week later, and am partly responsible for one of Slaughter at Sundown's worst seasons on record. Seems I made a better Grim Reaper mascot than a Devil. Made better money, too.

I remember that...
Since I've only had one job so far I'd have to go it. I bag groceries and load groceries into cars for assholes. |

It actually wasn't too bad, until the management team tried to force me to get as many credit cards out of customers as possible, even from people who have repeatedly explained to me why they do not want one. I actually work very well in a customer service setting. But badgering people to get the store credit card when they clearly do not want to get one went against my idea of "keeping the customer happy." |

Any job where you have to interactive with the customer is, overall, incredibly unappealing to me. Working at Domino's the last six years on and off I've had my share of assholes come through the doors. People that decide it's perfectly alright and call for a delivery order one minute before closing time, people who call back and complain about their order being wrong when they placed their order themselves online, etc.

Domino's was the best job I ever had. Any job has it's ups and downs. For me, I was always driving around all night, and barely spent time talking to people except for when in the store and when I get to their house. Good times. Anyway, I'm sure my current job beats you all as the worst. I work technical support for directv. I get paid $8 an hour to get trolled all day. If you want to hear just how stupid the people I talk to are, about 90% of calls people start jammering on about how they hate directv, and that they have nothing but problems, then their tv or directv equipment turns out to not be turned on. I have customers that when i tell them to press a button on their remote, they literally say "I don't know how to do that". So... yeah. I dare someone to beat that. |

See at MC Donalds you have to announce all your specials and talk to the customer in rap-form. (As opposed to McDonalds, where it's just a regular fast food joint.) Perfect for a wordsmith, who hasn't built up a reputation to sign on with major record label yet. |

Just think of me as your vacation.
Also now that I think about it, I DID have that job for like four hours one day. It was so shitty I got fired. |

Worst by far was asphalt crewman. 500 degree material (that you have to stand on AND in to shovel it down, 100 degree-plus heat on some days (85-98 on mdt of your work days), seasonal, LOOOOONG hrs. (I maxed out at 79 one week), and the fact that you CANNOT have a wardrobe if you wanna work with tar and diesel, along with crap pay, made that job ACTUAL Hell on Earth.
