This may sound like an odd question, but must there be actual swords in the sword duel, or are we allowed to use a sword substitute?

In other words, the actions in the fight would pretty much be the same if you replaced the swords with whatever object.

Like swordfighting with an umbrella or a closed paper fan. Or an unloaded gun (or just not shooting with it)

Me, too. I spent five whole days on this so far. I don't wanna win by default.

UPDATE: Here's my entry. Took me a while, but I think it went well. It was too large for Photobucket without requiring me to pay, it's over 1MB.

I think contests are dieing done. I think they are too frequent. Maybe every other week instead of weekly?

They are NOT too frequent (Personally I don't think they are frequent enough.)

Nor dying.

That said:
The timing was bad on this one.

Comic contests take more time and effort than spriting/art contests (especially if they require movement AND scripting)
I would have prefered to see this one held during a slower time of the year (like a break).
Judging from experience, more time would have been of benefit, 2 weeks instead of the standard 1 for this sort of thing. Maybe even 3 if the competition became heated.

Problem was that noone seemed to interested. If there would be more replies like : "Sounds interesting, I might join in" or " I don't think I have much time but I would like to enter"
then I would gladly stretch out the entry period.

Oh, I was interested, but:

1. Not enough free time.

2. Track pad. (USB ~~mouse~~ ports no longer work.)

See? Bad timing. Might have had more entries if this started on a later date. No interest was shown since most of those interested knew they wouldn't have time for it.
