View Full Version : GlassMan's sprites and abominations. Depends on what you want to see.

Hmm. I'm not entirely sure about this. Actually, I think I may have an older sprite thread from '07, but I really don't want to go back there. Since posting there would likely be considered necroposting (And the time I spent on various forums over the year have taught me that necroposting is a captial crime.), I really don't want to go back to it. Nor do I wish for that thread to be merged with this, or this to be merged with that. In all honesty, I'd really appreciate it if we could just simply delete the old thread, and move on, because that was 2007, and I didn't know what the hell I was doing back then.

Trust me, I've improved a lot. Not as a person, but as a spriter.

Anyway, sprites. Sprites, sprites, sprites. S... p... ... rites. This is the main focus of this thread, one would hope. So, let's get down to business, shall we?

This first sheet is for a Robot Master, Volcano Man, which is the first RM in the game I'm programming. I say "first RM", because he's the first one I've programmed, and I haven't done much balancing yet, so he's pretty easy so far.
Anyway, I fear it's almost obvious what the base was for this sheet. It's really just a Drill Man edit, and I might go back and give him custom sprites.

Oh, the horror. This sheet, it's very obvious what the base is. This is Hypno Man, the second Robot Master I programmed. This sheet's kinda old. I think I'll go back and edit it a bit, maybe implement NES colors.

Ah, now here's a custom sprite sheet! This was my first fully-custom sheet that I was ever completely satisfied with. I used Mega Man's height as a rough guideline of how tall he should be. Either way, this guy is Mirror Man. He's a laid-back fellow.

Next up is Wing Man, my second "good" full-custom sheet. Getting the feathers on his head (if you can tell they're feathers) to look decent was a challenge. There's apparently also a Wing Man in a MM hack. I really wish I had known that. Oh well, it's not like I'm ripping off Capcom's official stuff.

This herpy piece of derp is an Assault Joe. They're pretty tough. I was originally planning on them having a homing projectile, but that would make them even tougher. They can take a lot of hits from the Mega Buster, and they fire four large shots in rather quick succession. Surprisingly, this is all fully custom, as well. Even the head, and the blaster on his other hand.
Not sure I like how it turned out, but he's just a minor enemy. I can edit him over time.

Finally, THIS is my current work in progress. Trying to get Zero into a BN style. Admittedly, I spent more time studying his X6 sprites to get the buster right, than the time I spent with the rest of his body. It's probably pretty obvious I used ProtoMan's sprite as a base (I'm not as comfortable with EXE sprites yet), and, as several people have pointed out, his head looks a little... ugh. His shiny metal undies of justice also have drawn some criticism, but I think I got his boobs right.

That's pretty much all I've got at this time. A lot of time I spend working with sprites is directly in Game Maker, so I don't make as many sheets as people say I should. I spend a lot more time programming and playing games than doing actual spriting, as well. I'm not much of a spriter, I'll admit, but I'm much, MUCH better than the re-colors and crap I did as a younger boy.

Rate 'em, even if you hate 'em. Any criticism, even if it's "This looks like shit" kind of criticism, I'll take it.

zero looks like he's wearing a diaper, how about you try slimming it down a a few pixels

Also, his face looks very long. It looks like some sort of kangaroo.

Oh geez, now I'm imagining, like, a kangaroo in a Zero costume with a diaper. ._.;

Thanks for the comments, though. I'll get around to fixing it probably some time this weekend. I can't promise it's gonna look perfect, but I'll at least try to improve on it.

The rest of him looks fine enough, though?

Faces are tricky in BN style. There is usually not much detail and when there is, it's high-contrast. You should use a darker secondary color for the skin to contrast his face more. It's isn't gonna get better than that.

The colors are also a bid strong for BN. Shading tends to be more dynamic and more subtle. So for the red palette, try to not just add black to the color. Mix it up a little bit. The contrast between them should also be slightly reduced.

Another thing about the BN style is that the shading tends to be static and varies to create depth. So this "diaper" issue is because it's pure white. Perhaps you could pass it off as a gray since it's in between. The farthest arm should also NOT be bright white. This "fades" out to the lightest gray you have. Keep your lights close and the depth should kick in.
