Apparently my homeland was hit hard by a tsunami/earthquake yesterday.

Yeah, this has been on the news 24/7 in the UK. Utterly horrendous.
I can't imagine what it must be like.

Even more horrendous has been people's reaction to it. I over-heard someone say "They deserved it after what they did to our guys in World War 2!"

If only "being a complete fucktard" was a valid excuse for raging against someone. Alas, I actually need my job, so I had to bite my tongue. Bloody mores and manners of polite society. Sometimes it gets in the way of dealing with idiots.

Yeah..I also heard some jerkass quotes I refuse to repeat here...
Anyways, disasters like this have worldwide effect, so I wonder how long it will take vefore things return to normal.

That happened 2 days ago already. The problem is the nuclear power plant explosion which nearly caused in a meltdown. I'm pretty sure most people no about the earthquake and the tsunamis, but a little less about the nuclear power plant. Has anyone else heard about the town completely eradicated by the earthquake/tsunami which children would learn in schools that once every thousand years that town is destroyed by a tsunami/earthquake? I didn't think it to be creepy how they could 'predict' such a case of once every thousand years. I think they were simply brilliant geologists or something which managed to find out that this happens as often as once every thousand years.

i heard about this also, yes, the news about japan is even in america, but the instead of making barbaric comments about it, the christian churches are praying for them. i cant help but "feel" saddened by the trouble they are having.

Made worse by the fact that it's a small island nation, with a huge population. Hit hard indeed. Could they have evacuated earlier? I mean geologists could of seen this coming...

they evacuated as quickly as possible. It's just that it was stronger than assumed and the evacuation area wasn't large enough, not to mention quickly enough. They did foresee it, but couldn't do anything about it. They were like sitting ducks.

The problem with Honshu, is that it's a small island housing most of Japan's population in only a few areas. Any time any natural disater hits there it's going to be catastrophic. At any rate, Naoto Kan is going to have his hands full for the next several months.

Just so you know, earthquakes are nearly impossible to predict as they have no precursors.

They never check the tectonic (sp?) plates?

It's near impossible to go that low, and extremely dangerous.

My feelings are of admiration for how well they responded. Almost immediately after the earthquake/tsunami hit, people were rebuilding and trying to contain the radiation at a stage where Americans would be in a total panic.

Earthquakes are technically sudden releases of energy due to friction between the tectonic plates. There is currently no known technological device or technique to determine when these releases occur. Where is generally a matter of estimation.
