So NASA is blowing up the moon. They'll then go and drink the debris, and if it's refreshing, they'll know there is was water on the moon.

^Serious article. For a more sarcastic one, read this one:

Lets.

No seriously, two moons, what the fruck.

Why are you posting this now? This was over a week ago, I followed it live. The amount of debris wasn't enough to reach a conclusion.

D:

Why am I so late on these badass things?

Also, Snap, why didn't they fire a third rocket then? =/

Woah. And here I thought Piccolo beat us to it. -_-
Well, studying the debris, and creating an Observational Base on the Moon actually seems like a rather intelligent idea.

Although, then again, I can't help but think that this will have some serious negative repercussions on the Earth: mankind isn't exactly renowned for the good it's done to Nature and its intricate balances for the sake of "Study". What's more, the Moon is crucial in regulating the Earth's Climate, and the Tides. Blowing 500 Tonnes off its surface is bound to have some kind of effect, and with our History, I really doubt it's going to be a positive one.
I mean, even if this doesn't end up completely screwing Earth's Environment over, there's still 500 Tonnes of Space Rock flying around right next to our (One and only) Home Planet. Best Case scenario, we get a Pretty Ring, like Saturn. Worst Case scenario, we get thousands of Moon Rock Meteors plummeting towards Earth.

... You know, at first glance at this Thread, I thought it meant NASA was actually going to blow the Moon to Pieces, and thought "Wow. Right out of Dragon Ball Z. This is almost dumber than the Hadron Collider.". Then my next thought after reading the article was "Oh, I see. They're just going to blast a huge piece of its mass off so they can Construct an observatory, and study the resulting debris. That's not nearly as stupid as exploding the entire thing DeathStar-Style. Still not a great idea, but it's not as stupid as the Black Hole Machine."
And now, my opinion stands at "Well, alright. We're trying to blow our own Natural Satellite that regulates our Planet's - already endangered and highly delicate - Climate apart for the sake of completely theoretical research, once again risking the fate of the Entire Effing Human Race. Holy Shit. Darwinism, guys. UR DOIN IT RITE. You know, I'm starting to think that "Science" and "Scientists" are just a force that's trying to Exterminate our Species by whatever means necessary. <_<".

I can easily imaging the NASA rocket scientist studying their evil laughs for the rocket-launching. Almost too easily.

Then again, 500 ton isn't that much. I'm just worried about them, or anyone else, doing it again, and again, and again. Then we'll have a problem.

Even if 500 Tonnes isn't enough to noticeably upset the Earth's Atmosphere, at least not in the immediate future, it's still throwing up that same amount of Rock from the closest possible point to Earth. I mean, sure, some of them will Burn Up on Entry, and some of them may not even hit, but I really don't think it's realistic to think that none of the Pieces of Space Rock make contact with us.

And besides. This is just... Simply a Bad Idea. I mean, so what if there was water on the Moon? So what if there is still? It doesn't affect us one way or another, and even if it did, that still wouldn't be enough to justify a risk like that. <_<

I'm not saying it's a good idea, I'm just saying I don't think it's as bad as you make it out to be. For those moon-rocks to hit us is next to impossible, both because they'll burn up, and the chance of them hitting water instead of land is way bigger. And no, they cannot cause a tidal wave by then.

Not saying in the slightest it's a good idea, though. But this is NASA, I expected it, sort of. I mean, these are the guys who tested what is the best way of having sex in space. Tax money well spent, wouldn't you say?

Hey for all we know, the moon could be one giant planet sized battle ship disgused as the moon. *Shot*

But yes, Hey NASA, why don't you save the planets dstruction till AFTER we colonize other planets. Or at least untill we discover Spiral Energy.

Ug... you guys...
Seriously.

Size of a football field crater. Thats what? Nothing. Also its going to be 500 tons of pretty much small rocks and DUST. The worse that is likely to happen is that THE MOON will get a pretty ring. Honestly. The moon has been hit with far worse. I'm pretty dang sure the biggest rock that can hit us would be around a ton or two at the most.

Its not like we're taking the LHC and firing it at the moon. OR making an LHC big enough to fire two moons at each other, sheesh.

Further... the risk is non-existant. The LHC has a bigger risk of dooming the planet.

The possible rewards could mean we could colonize the moon easier than we thought, because it has you know, WATER, so a moon base wouldn't have to ship (as much) precious water from Earth to the moon. Which would pave the way for colonizing other planets. Which I think most of you guys would agree is a good idea.

In short, NASA knows what it is doing. AND it'll be cool to watch.

Why would it matter if there's water on the moon? With no atmosphere, it cannot support life. The only thing I see coming from this are a bunch of "new-age (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Idiot_(person))" "mind-body-spirit (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hippy)" nimrods setting up a lucrative "cure-all (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lie)" moonwater business.
We definitely don't need anymore "power-pyramid (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pyramid_power)" "crystal-healing (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Crystal_healing)" nonsense.
