I'm surprised nobody's talking about this...

http://www.gametrailers.com/video/e3-09-castlevania-lords/50684

A Castlevania that ISN'T spearheaded by IGA, but by Hideo Kojima of all people... Not to mention a Castlevania game that originally wasn't one to begin with.

DMC with a whip. That pretty much sums up my opinion thus far. And I mean that in a good way, the only reason I don't play DMC is because of the rating.

What would it say about me, if I said that Patrick Stewart is one of my favorite actors of all time?

And I now have a new game to wait a year for.

It'd be cool if this game was actually Castlevania at all.

First Impression:
Cool! New Castlevania, and theres a new Metroid! Video games are getting awesome again!

Last Impression:
Great. New Devil of War and Ninja Gaiden.

What.
.........
It seems to me like they're just copying God of War and DMC now. I never remember them having those huge Shadow of the Colossus/God of War Stage-Sized Enemies... And CastleVania is a Gothic Horror Action RPG.
Emphasis on "Gothic", and "Horror". That means Skeletons, Bats, Wolves, Gargoyles, Cathedrals, Vampires, Full Moon for Months at a time...
Not Jungles. Jungles... Guh.

Lovely, a Dolled Up Instalment that's also a God of War clone with a whip, with a generic art style and no memorable music in hearing range. Not to mention the guys developing this game also made Clive Barker's Jericho, not a good sign. Patrick Stewart doesn't come close to making up for this.

It's too bright and sunny for a Castlevania title. If it didn't have the logo at the end, I would'v never been able to tell it was a Castlevania game. :/

It does look like God of War and DMC. I don't like either of them, so I don't know if I'll like this one... you know, Castlevania seems to be going down in history as a series that reinvents itself by copying other peoples' ideas. First Metroid... now this. <=/

Well, personally, I love the God of War Series, but... I don't love how a lot of people seem to be ripping it off. And badly, at that. I could see a God of War-based/ripoff actually being successful and even pretty decent, if anyone could do it half decently.

CastleVania wise, this continues to be my reason to live to not give up on the entire Series and kill myself (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lcI6j0Y24FM).

I think if the game didn't have the Castlevania title, maybe it would have lived on it's own... For one thing, if this is a Castlevania game, then Dracula is an absolute necessity for it.

Candescence
26-06-09, 12:08
Well, the mask plot seems like a perfect "revive Dracula" plot to me, I mean, come on, an artefact of ressurection? Obvious. But this is a Dolled Up Installment, if Dracula DOES get in, they'll likely shoehorn him in like Rare did with Andross for Star Fox Adventures.

It's sad that I see this topic when I first start snooping around here again... First I get disappointed in Metallica when I finally heard Death Magnetic, and now I'm disappointed in Konami AND Hideo... It's a sad day.

Enigma

First of all....Metallica has been dissapointing since 1994. Second of all, this game looks and sounds nothing like a Castlevania game. I suppose they might add a few things before actually releasing it, but I don't get my hopes up. Now the game that DragonZero linked to seems to be the real next instalment. Alucard looks sick as hell, nuff' said.

Alucard IS sick as hell, he's the man.

And yes, metallica is a sort of perpetual fail generator...I'd just heard that this time it was different... ;_; I'm so gullible.

I disagree, everything up till ...And Justice For all was pretty good. Then they turned all pop and mainstream...bleh! But to stay on topic, I just played God of War and DMC4, I could not believe the actual similarity. Never really played either of them while looking at the other.

Galeon

I think it's because of how the Combat Cross's attacks are almost similar to how the Chaos Blades/Blades of Athena works in terms of effects.

They're both "beat all enemies senseless" games. I like games that have both interactions between characters and battles, sorta like Fable.

So true-Wait, theres a whip in dmc. That means... its just DMC. =/

Oh, and why on earth are you still alive and haven't played DMC? Go, now. Hurry!

Darth Dumbo
05-07-09, 19:28
1.) I only got a ps2 in March. 2.) It's been largely under my radar since forever.

Also, I was unaware of any other weapons in DMC.

Lern
05-07-09, 19:57
dmc4? HAS A WIDE VARIETY OF WEAPONS.

A fire Whip, oversized sword(what was it called again?), A weapon that has... spikes... and skulls.. that fires burning daggers and roses that make those floating flaming daggers burst known as Lucifer, Knuckles and iron boots with gas mask(Gilgamesh), and a huge shapeshifting, type-attuning automatic gun known as pandora. A sawn off shotgun(Coyote a), dual super rapid pistols(Evony and Ivory), single dual-shot pistol(Uh...name?), Nearly oversized sword that can inject fuel to burn it up and explode(Red Queen), and a HUGE fist(Devil arm), that can extend to about 20 meters in length, and can grow to about one and a half the sized of your character.

Yeah, thats about it. Oh, and a katana that can summon a bad-ass demon of sorts. Called Yamato.

Yup, thats a wide variety. 7 melee weapons, 4 ranged. This includes both Nero and Dante weapons.

It's also the second worst.

Lern

It's the only one I played and was very good. If it is the second worst, that means the others are Very, very, very, very good.

Candescence
20-07-09, 04:59
The other DMC games have a large variety of weapons, too. DMC4 is quite a good game, way better than 2 at least.

Galeon
22-07-09, 01:35
4 was pretty unique since it gave us a new hero... Even though he wasn't exactly very weapon diverse (he only hand 2 blades and one gun), he did have something to compensate for it.

Though back to Castlevania stuffs, has there been any new news or trailers on Lords of Shadow?? I haven't seen any myself as of late...

Candescence
24-07-09, 03:32
There hasn't been anything new since E3.

Besides it looking like a bad GoW clone (IMO, it looks nothing like DMC, it just doesn't have the style), I think one of the worst parts about this is that Kojima (who, I repeat, is only OVERSEEING this game's development, it's being made by MercurySteam, which isn't a good sign in itself, and Kojima himself has never touched a Castlevania game) is treating this like a continuity reboot. Which is the worst idea ever. Die-hard Castlevania fans, when they realise this, WILL be pissed off, and to top it off, it's completely uncessary. We haven't even gotten to the final battle in 1999, yet! THEN perhaps it would a viable idea, but Hideo Kojima just doesn't seem in touch with the series, IMO. A whip-like weapon and a couple of werewolves does not automatically result in a geniune Castlevania game. It seems they've taken more inspiration from LotR than Castlevania, honestly. Look at the Arago-I mean, Gabriel!

What makes you think they haven't already? If they are supposedly die-hard, as you suggest, then by all means they already figured it out long ago.
If the Dungeon and Anti-chapel are any indication, anyway.

Candescence

Not that it matters much now, the recent trailer's mention of Belmont and the guy mentioning said name talks a lot like Dracula, and the fact that Castlevania the Adventure is getting a ReBirth remake makes me think that Kojima is a lying prick.

DragonZero
17-09-09, 01:21
I did like the newer Trailer better, but something Tells me that the majority of this Game will still ultimately just be God of War/DMC with Dracula tacked on haphazardly as a Final Boss.

Also, I looked into the Plot a while ago, and apparently Konami actually thinks that almost completely discarding the entire established CastleVania Mythos is actually a good idea. And I think the Character, Gabriel, wants these Enchanted Masks to Resurrect his Deceased Wife, Marie, despite the fact that she's a Ghost who speaks to him and effectively serves as a Navigator and Narrator for the entire freaking Game. What the Hell.

Candescence

I'm pretty sure only Kojima has said anything about a reboot, and there's already indications that he's making stuff up, what with the remake of The Adventure coming up. It seems the Japanese have their own Peter Molyneux, except this one is just pulling stuff from his ass.

To be fair, she's apparently stuck in limbo. I think that would be a fate worse than death, dead or not, I doubt Gabriel would leave his lover to such a fate.

But still, the mask is such an obvious ressurect Dracula plot it's just not funny.

Jesus people, stop hatin'.
I love how everything is a "God of War" clone when that style existed way before it, but was only made popular because of it.

Also, people also called Lament a DMC clone. stop thinking in terms of what game its like, and think of it in terms of genres and styles.

Also, game looks awesome.

Koijima? sure why not. To be perfectly honest, I think IGA is loosing his touch. and the new Harmony of despair proves it. With the sorrow games, he has written himself into somewhat of a corner concerning Dracula. if he makes the 99 game, then that will only PROVE that, so he isnt gonna make that. all he can really make are prequels and sequels to older games. and Since Dracula revives every century, hes got his limits unless he throws in one of those early resurrections.

Im very eager to see this new take on the series. It is its own stand alone title, "non canon" to put it bluntly, and therefore, can reimagine the Castlevania universe any way it pleases. And I think it looks very very cool, and very fun.

Also, on the fan rumor that "it originally wasnt Castlevania" it was ALWAYS a Castlevania. Konami had different teams come up with different pitches for the next 3D consolevania. Cox's team presented one, IGA's team one, etc etc. they chose the David Cox one. They presented it at E3 without naming it Castlevania, to see how people would react to it. THEN they revealed the name as CASTLEVANIA: Lords of Shadow.

(said by Cox himself BTW)

I bought it but only had the time to get up chapter 2.
Seriously, I'm having a blast whenever I play it.

Buy it. Love it.

I'm not gonna lie, it does resemble GoW. But it also resembles DMC and Shadow of the Colossus. So yeah, people, it's a great mix of them all.

I just beat this game. it was amazing. I really loved it. As far as im concerned, it' a fresh new take on Castlevania, but with enough of what I know and love to still feel like a Castlevania game. Of course, the whole POINT was to feel completely different from what Castlevani is and was, and I think it did that well while still retaining it's soul. if anything, it is really much like classic castlevania. Like, Pre-IGA castlevania. it goes back to the days when Castlevania games were actually challenging.

Hey, Order of Ecclesia was kinda hard! ...maybe. Honestly, I thought it was of decent difficulty. Same thing for Lords of Shadow.

So yeah, I really like Lords of Shadow as a whole. The start felt rather bland, but the middle was great and the last few chapters were amazing, although some of the puzzles on the last few levels were silly. Especially that one level with the calendar puzzle and the colored switches.

Flame
04-01-11, 00:32
Yeah some puzzles were silly, But for the most part, they were kinda fun. My favorite stage by far though, has to be the Clockwork tower. You cant play the Clockwork Tower and say it doesnt remind you of good ol' vania clock tower platforming. (minus the medusa heads)
