I'm a spriting virgin, please be gentle

I know it uses more than 2 layers by NES standards, ignore that for now, it's not important for what I need it

You clearly aren't or there wouldn't be anything here, would there? But anyway, its pretty good. The fins look a bit sketchy, however.

Well, compared to that sprite from the MM9 data, the fins seem to be shaped appropriately, but I do think there could be some detail added (such as the line seperating the fins (it's seen in the official Bass sprites from MM&B.).) But like Tuna said, it's not bad for a 'spriting virgin'.

It's much better than my first sprite XD.

Anyway, maybe you could edit Forte to be taller? He IS taller than Megaman.
It also looks like it breaks the color limit.

@Ryo & Tuna
I know those fins don't seem to be completely correct perspective wise but I stuck with it because the official sprite from MM9 was this way.
As for the seperation of the fins, I'm glad you say that. I tried that before and I personally don't really like it. I'm not sure, what do you think?

http://users.telenet.be/snap/Schoolstuff/MegaMod/bass_line_big.png

@Korby
I know it breaks the color limit, but as I said just ignore that. I'm planning to use this in a game using the same engine as my ZX fangame. The NES has color limitations but I don't. Even so, if I would replace the dark grey by black and replace the reds by something else it would pass the color limit.
I'll give it a try to make him a bit taller and see how that ends up. But I'd rather keep him the same size as he is now, this is his size on the Capcom sprite and it would be faster to code if he's the same size as Megaman and Protoman.

Why does he have purple eye-linER and not eye-linES?

well this is really good, I maked a full sheet of the bass sprite from MM9, and you bested my sheet in some parts, your sheet is very good, yeah.

I'm actually starting to like those lines that seperate his fin

And it's pretty good too!

http://users.telenet.be/snap/Schoolstuff/MegaMod/bass_dash_big.png

Dashing. Which one should I use? Top one is based on a pose from a PD expanded Quint sheet by LordOfNightmare, bottom one is the pose from Thanatos Zero's PD Megaman dash sprites.

Ryo Hazaki
08-01-09, 17:28
Why not try making one similar to his dash from MM&B?

Snap
08-01-09, 17:41
Because I'm bad at spriting and all I can do without messing it up is some simple edits, definitely not creating something from scratch. Now you might suggest practicing but spriting is just not my thing and I really don't find it all that fun to be honest.
I'm making this because I want to use it in a game and because I can't/won't tell what game it is yet I got to do this myself.

Ryo Hazaki
08-01-09, 17:47
Actually, it wouldn't be that hard to make the MM&B dash. All you need to do is edit the right arm on the Thanatos Zero PD dash you already have to where it appears to be open and raise it to where it's near its head, and edit the face to where it looks like he's angry.

I thought 8-bit was badass by defenition.

But yes, the bottom does look better, but needs to be edited to look more like the MM&B dash. for the sake of consitancy.

I gave it a try Ryo, personally I don't think it looks good at all

Suggestions on how to do that without straying from the MM9 design? I want to stick as close to that as possible. If I make his eyes red as in MM&B he looks like some sort of failed zombie.

Ryo Hazaki
08-01-09, 19:17
That looks much more like the MM&B dash. And looks more appropriate for Bass. Good work.

You think? I kinda hate the right hand now, it's so huge. It doesn't feel like the 8bit style imho.

Ryo Hazaki
08-01-09, 19:24
Look at Megaman's hand when using certain weapons. His hand goes through that same kind of growth.

Alright, I'll stick with that then.

Bass can't shoot while dashing, but Bass does a double jump so adding a megaman styled jump will just look stupid, it would be great if you make a different jump for him.

In my game Bass will be able to shoot while dashing (sometimes). I'll try changing the jump pose to something more like MM&B.

Some small changes, added/edited a few poses

And something I made a few weeks ago just for laughs never to be used in anything else but my TF2 spray, the Pyro. Stupid I know but mmmwhhhhwhhhh.

I'm being nitpicky, but when Bass jumps, that purple jewel on his body almost disappears. Other than that, this is looking really good. Nice work.

I always imagined that Bass' chest plate wasn't just metal but more stretchy like the green power ranger's chest thingy. Otherwise how could he ever point his buster straight up in MM&B if those shoulderpads are in the way? So I figured it would move up as his torso stretches for the jump.
But you're right, it does look kinda awkward this way, I'll try to make a completely new jump pose where the chest plate stays in place and the arms are more like his MM7 or MM&B pose.

The wings and helmet are way too bigm but otherwise are pretty good. But he still has the eyeliner effect. His purple goes down his cheek, not on his eyelids.

Snap
24-01-09, 19:23
The thing is, when I put it on his cheek you can hardly see it at 100% and zoomed in it just looks lame. Which is why I tried it as eyeliner as you call it, which makes him look a bit more evil if you ask me. Here's a comparison.

As for the size, it's actually in the same proportions as in MM8.

I really want to ask this, how do you post the images with transparent background?

Of course his wings are to bigger for him but the real problem is the helmet fin's, it starts from bass helmet jewel and ends behing his neck.

Move the fin's so they start in the right side of the jewel.

Snap
24-01-09, 22:08
In photoshop just delete the background and save as png.

Thx for the fin comment, I can't believe I hadn't noticed that before, or anyone else but you in this thread for that matter

Drei

I can notice the purple cheek, and it isn't exactly correct. My solution is to add a purple pixel to the right of his bottom right eye. This will give it a better shape and make it much more noticeable.

Snap
25-01-09, 08:50
I changed the shape of the crystal a bit to make more room for the fin. This also made some extra room on the head to make his "ear" piece thingy.
1, 2 or 3?

Still wrong (even though I'm not drei).

It has to touch his eyes and curve to the helmet.
