I wasn’t sure if I was supposed to post that into the Scientific Discussions (http://www.sprites-inc.co.uk/forum/showthread.php?t=7362) thread, since that thread was mostly oriented about physics and things like that.

Anyway, here’s some quite old stuff I stumbled upon.

Non-humanoid Autonomous Robots

Robot: BigDog
Constructor: BostonDynamics (http://www.bostondynamics.com/index.php)
Funder: DARPA (http://www.darpa.mil/) (sigh...)
Detailed information: Official webpage (http://www.bostondynamics.com/content/sec.php?section=BigDog)

Video:

The first 35 seconds show the robot climbing a beautiful leafy autumnal landscape, while making the same noise as an angry wasp nest. Nothing mush impressive you say? Wait to see the how that beast actually manages to remain upright after being actually kicked (0’35) or while walking on frozen ground (1’26). And keep in mind it’s a robot, not a living being with spinal-reflexes. Impressive in a creepy way.

Humanoid Pseudo-autonomous Robots

Robot: HAL-5 (Hybrid Assistive Limb)
Constructor: Cyberdyne (www.cyberdyne.jp/english/index.html) (currently down)
Detailed information: Official webpage (www.cyberdyne.jp/english/robotsuithal/index.html) (currently down) or the video below.

Nothing much to say…

Humanoid Autonomous Robots

Robot: ASIMO (Advanced Step in Innovative MObility)
Constructor: Honda (http://world.honda.com/)
Detailed information: Official webpage (http://world.honda.com/ASIMO/technology/)

Video:

0’00 – 1’15: running straight ahead
1’15 – 3’03: running in a curve or while avoiding fixed obstacles
3’03 – 4’21: walking with somebody (while holding a hand)
4’21 – 5’00: doing super-sentai moves… I mean, showing the various degree of freedom.
5’00 – 6’47: walking while pushing a trail
6’47 – 8’25: being a woman’s slave

Robot: REEM-B
Constructor: Pal Technology Robotics (http://www.pal-robotics.com/)
Detailed information: Official webpage (http://www.pal-robotics.com/specifications.html)

Not as impressive and smooth-looking as ASIMO, but good nonetheless.

Robot: QRIO (Quest for cuRIOsity)
Constructor: Sony (http://www.sony.com/)
Global information: RobotAdvice.com (http://www.robotadvice.com/sony-qrio_robot.html)

Another ASIMO wannabe, somewhat cuter… in a creepy way.

And now the last but not the least...

WTF Robots

Robot: Actroid DER2
Constructor: Kokoro Company Ltd (http://www.kokoro-dreams.co.jp/english/)
Global information: Wikipedia (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Actroid)

Japanese men: *fap fap fap fap!*

Robot: HUBO (Humanoid roBOt)
Constructor: KAIST

I remember watching most of these last year in my computer class. I always did find the human looknig ones kinda creepy, even if it is impressive. >>;

Nevertheless, look at all the experiments... The advancements... For science!

Next up is Terminator, we all know it.

...

I find it amazing really, technology doubles every year, so it won't be long until these robotics are perfected, in theory.

oh god!

well this really amaze and creep me out, but those robot use batteries right?

Well for:

Bigdog: It's really amazing and it's more amazing the fact he can't fall if people kick him or make him walk in snow, but he's not representing what the robot makers want, a robot that can make human moves like falling, walking straigh and run.

Hal-5: It's ovbius than you will think about megaman by watching that guy walking with the robot suit, I have remembered watching the video about his old version which could'nt lift more than 10 times the weight it can, but is just for people who really needs it.

ASIMO: this guy rocks, even if he can't lift his foot totally, It can fricking run and walk!!

REEM-B: this guys sure creeps me out, he can make a map of the whole house by just looking at some rooms! It looks like a police robot, really creeps me.

QRIO: this is a ASIMO wannabe, he's not cute but he can do way more movement than the ASIMO.

Actroid DER2 she takes the win, It's more like a person and can do moves as humans can do, even if they didn't show more than below her belly, it really mimic human moves.

The einsten bot: It's just a ASIMO lookalike with a synthetic skin that looks like Al einsten. but for some reason, he looks EVIL!

Meh, cool robot but the humanoid chick takes the win, for me of course.

Ah. Some of these are new to me, others really cool.

BigDog: Really impressive. A huge leap in robotics that I hope can be learned from to make all other robots better.

Hal-5: When I saw the preview image, I thought the blue thing was a face... Then I thought HAL-9000 from 2001: A Space Oduyssey. Really cool, and probably the one to be commonly used around the world first. I like the design of the plates too.

ASIMO: Just awesome.

REEM-B: ASIMO is better in some aspects, but this robot is better in others.

QRIO: Eh. Smaller, more movement.

Actroid DER2: The voice is annoying. Sure it looks like a human, but I've never been a fan of androids. Something about their expressions looking really fake.

HUBO: Eh. I thought there was a similar one that looked more like an elf, but responded better.

Ah… I almost forgot something.

When we think about robot, the most common image that comes in mind is the humanoid one: a full robot with a large range of movements. However, there’s another approach to the concept.

Look out, people: these are T-1000 great great great great great grandfathers!

Modular Robots

This video shows basically what a modular robot is and how it works.
Though the end of the demonstration is… quite a failure, the technology itself is smoothly going its way.

Other video:
An other modular robot in several conformations (http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=4oSavAHf0dg)
A concept of modular robot with a third degree of liberty (http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=VyzVtTiax80)

Nota : all right, perhaps this ( http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=qX6clRC21vo) is a bit closer to what T-1000 is supposed to be ¦3
