View Full Version : Megaman 9's Robot Masters!
We've seen the screen shots. We've heard all the news. We've watched the footage, but we haven't seen the robot masters yet. Simply put, the guide lines are to create sprites of what you think each of the new Robot Masters will look like. All you need is a single sprite to represent each Master. (You can't skip out on anyone! )
The style is the classic Megaman style (NES of course) and you have until July 14 to get it done. That's five days! (That should a good amount of time, it's only eight 8-bit sprites after all) The winner will be picked on how accurate his/her sprites are to the real thing.
Forgot what the Robot Master's names are? Here you go:

Not quite, there might be 4 colors per sprite, but to generate a whole, you can combine multiple sprites. Ussually, bosses use 2 overlapping sprites, in Rockman 4 there's often the case of 3 overlapping sprites, though the third is unnessecary.
Furthermore, not all sprites in the style have a black outline. Some sprites and tiles deliberately don't, taking advantage of the black background to add a color for them.
I see. I only looked at the Rockman 2 sprites.

Plugman's colors (Slightly) and design look close.. Get rid of the tail, and Tornadoman's body is the same... my old Hornet man looked alm close to that one.. Thats about it.... not as much as I thought..
It sucks that I have to do all 8...I'm just too lazy...oh well

I got the idea for green from a navi(whose name I cant remember) that had plugs and stuff from MMBN: Network Transmission.
My tornadoman has curved lines, why yours are straight, not to mention the difference with the limbs.And my Hornetman has a hive on it(much like queen bee from ZxA.)

Huh... I actually found time to do it. Probably not what Capcom came up with, but I had fun, anyways. And I got to work on my scratching skills.
Im just wondering.... why does everyone think splashwoman will be a mermaid? Or have a spear? Or even both?

He wasn't accusing anyone of theft; he was saying that a couple of them were, in concept, designed similarly. And they are, to an extent. Granted, that probably doesn't mean anything, as the concepts are pretty obvious manifestations of the names in the first place, but I can see what he's saying and there's no need to flame him for his comment (even if you were justified).

I'd use the custom robot masters for this contest purely because I already have a Magma man and a robot master that could pass for Plug man and for Concrete man, but I guess I'll not. :p

I'll be rather surprised if Splash is not a mermaid type. The real wild cards here are galaxy, jewel, and maybe magmaman. Especailly Galaxy.
I do predict he'll throw mini galaxies at you. Or have a shield weapon.

And he seems to have put in most effort into his sprites. Barely anyone who is in this contest seems to have not put very much effort into their entries.

I put effort into the contest. Just not into the sprite quality.
Which isn't as important is this particular contest. The important thing is the design rather than how well it is sprited.
And knowing how the RM's are designed in the past are also important.
I merely put my effort into the thinking part rather than the spriting part.
You could sprite a masterpiece of a sprite, far better than all the rest, and still lose horribly here. The well sprited part only applies to designs that are close in nature.
Just something one should keep in mind.

You're not being an ass, as effort would be nice. But the lack of effort is partially due to the style and partially due to the time limit.

The sprites don't count because most people aren't very cool with the person judging also sending in entries. (even though this contest is a bit different) Unless, most are ok with me entering.
I'm honestly pretty happy that more people are trying to sprite in style now. (and not just ignoring that part) After all, attempting to sprite in the style will not only help convey the robot master's appearance better but also shows that you are following the rules.
Also, this isn't a sprite critique thread. If you want to get or give critique, do so in the main sprite forum.

Well, there's my entry, in my own opinion, I love about half, but hate the other half. I couldn't really work my brain to come up with better ideas. I still don't believe they are very bad, just not as good. But, I tried. :D

I hate Splash Woman's deisgn I made her, and I need to do somehting about Concrete Man's arms being more defind as a seperated mixer.

I was just about to post the same thing. I saw it on ProtoDude's RockMan Corner yesterday.
Ok! The contest is over! Looks like it'll be around September before we can get any results, but I wanted the contest quick before any spoilers came. (they did, but who cares)
Well, my first post is edited with all the contestants and if you're not on there you either: Didn't complete your entry, Dropped out, or didn't even attempt the style.

Well, for one, H-Zero looks like he's closest to Splash Woman.

The reason I dropped out was because the outlines of the robotmasters were revealed, and if that happened, the contest should really have ended right there to prevent cheating. No, I was not cheating. Go to the Rockman PM forums and to the fan creations section and to Ryo's mad creations you go!
Plus, I didn't want to rush my spriting. :/
All the outlines were average armored Robot Master outlines, with no especially strange details. Only Splash Woman was different, and only TWO personS made a mermaid anyway, which had already been submitted.

It's just that....well...I've seen what splash woman looks like, and I know none of those are right. But she does of a mermaid tail and some kind of trident thingy. But these are all pretty good still. If I've offened anyone, you have my sincery apology. (Other than that, I have no idea what the other robot masters look like).

Ok, sorry for the unreasonable delay. College and such came first and this contest completely washed away from my mind.
Alright, so lets sew this contest up!! Well, looks nobody could foresee what Hornetman and Galaxyman would look like, but that's the fun part of the contest!
Best over all:
I felt like NDraxian0 had the closest designs over all. His Jewel, Slash, Concrete, and Plugwere pretty close to what Capcom came up with. So NDraxian0 Takes the gold!
Most interesting concepts:
Pretty much, what I felt about who came up with the best designs. It's not accuracy, just how creative you were with the names:
Magma Man: Blackhook. I thought his Magmaman looked pretty slick. He's not the whole "volcano extreme" some of the others came up with. You can tell he's a robot, not some sort of golem.
Galaxy Man: Blackhook. I love the spiral on his face, the color shceme, and the jetpack you gave him. He would certainly make an interesting sprite to expand on!
Jewel Man: Candle Jack. Nice color choice. I certainly like the chest and helmet design.
Concrete Man: H-Zero. Treds or pillars for Concreteman seems to a common idea. But what I liked is how you have him a hammer and the big honkin' helmet. It was certainly a good idea for his design.
Hornet Man: NDraxian0. Even though everyone went with the bug motif, giving a robot master four arms was a pretty cool idea.
Plug Man: Reapman. I liked the idea of his arms attached by little bolts of electricity. A pretty unique idea. Also, is he surfing on something?
Tornado Man: Plasmaman. He just looks so "super hero". I love the scarf and chest pattern, it's certainly a nice touch.
Splash Woman: Plasmaman: While most went with mermaids (and well, so did Capcom) you took and interesting route. While she doesn't look very feminine, I'm sure with some tweaks you could change that. I also loved the helmet design.
Most retarded Robot Master: My Plugman. Seriously, what's up with him?
