View Full Version : Sniper Joe, a charcter for M.U.G.E.N.

Before I show you what ive worked on, perhaps its best to explain what mugen is for those of you that dont know.

Mugen is a fighting game engen that was created some time ago by a team of people called Electrobite. What they made was basicly a fighting game that almost anyone can contribue to. Its really easy to build a roster of whatever characters you want, any stage, any song, anything, as long as someone has made it that is. You can search for mugen videos on youtube and get thousands of responces and various battles. (I descoverd it searching for Optimus Prime on youtube and i got various recreations of his and Megatron's final battle from the G1 transformers movie.)

Ive created Sniper Joe for mugen, based on the SniperJoe 01 design from MM7. I edited the sprites from the Marvel Vs Capcom sprites found here on Sprites INC and used effects from other various mega man sprites found here.
If it wasnt for the team that runs this site, he would never have been made, Ide like to thank you all that run Sprites INC for what you've done.

It talkes ALLOT of sprites to make a good looking character. And everyone one of Sniper Joe's frames was frakensprited from at least 2 or 3 differnt sprites of MVC Mega Man. Allot of work went into him, and I owe allot to Sprites INC for the service they provide.
Sniper Joe will be ready for download on July 4th.

While I thought that might be neet at first, I decided agisnt it due to the fact that in clasic Mega Man, His shield is unbreakable. But I may yet make the sheild removeable in a future relese, depending on mass opinion.

I'd actually like to learn to program in MUGEN myself.
I tryed coding him myself atfirst, but I couldnt really figure it out. But i find if your sprites are good enough, and your a nice enough person, people will offer to help code or ask you to even join a team with various coders who are willing to help. Plus most people learn by just trying. There are also various code templates out there to work off of.

Megaman IS in Mugen. You just have to upload him.

Yes, if you have sprites of something, its possable to make it into mugen. (and even though theres a bunch of different mega man characters made for mugen, if you want to make one thats differnt, then go right ahead, there are like 9001 versions of Ryu/Ken/Akuma)
(never understood the coding for mugen either)


Acutaly friends of mine did most of the code, though i did do the basics.

My final suggestion, is when things are getting weird or confusing, join a mugen spicific fourm to get help, I personaly like Sonic X (http://mugenjf.myfastforum.org) and Infinity Mugen Team Fourms (http://www.infinitymugenteam.com/Forum_345)

Ah, well when I stared my project I wasnt apart of a team yet, and it seemed like it would be very complacated to try to figure out with out ripping off someone elses unique code work. But now, I think it is possable sence ive got help, so a later version will probably feature shield throwing mechanics, and a new sheild sprite.

It's not too bad so far. I would really like to see more custom poses and moves though. Like, his pose for instance. The character's fighting pose is very important and one of the most memorable things for the character. Right now, Joe has Megaman's. Try making it look like MM7 Joe's stance.

Also, not everyone has to have an uppercut. :P And it they do, it would be better if it didn't look like Megaman's (I saw Metalman use one, I can't recall of Joe did). I'd say it's also important that you give proper start up and end times to a move. Like, Metal man and Joe probably shouldn't be able to fire projectiles at the same rate (Nor do I think Joe's large shots should fire as fast as his normal shots).

Of course, it's possible you've addressed those problems, but it's hard to tell with that video quality ( I did notice a glitch in Metalman's helper coding though! XD ).

More than the graphics, I'm more interested in the balance this character has. So what can he do? What's his unique stuff?

Actualy I have tryed to make him compleately differnt from megaman's movements with everything.
His stance was based off of his mm7 stance, and in this version only the eye moves, though my skill is better now then when I started and in a new major version after this beta it will hopefuly even look more like the mm7 stance for Sniper Joe. One thing about him thats differnt then any other mugen character is that he can only block standing still, and not while doing anything else. Also he dosnt receve block damage. This ballences it out so that if you want to do anything, your going to be open for pain. Instead of a ryu/ken esque upper cut like mega man has, I have given Joe a move called the Sheild Breaker. Basicly he launches forward with his shield and hits with it, whats unique about the move is that its more effective on someone defending then nomral, and infact it does crap for damage unless the enemy blocks, this is to get back at people who turtle in fights. His launcher is a back flip kick, instead of megaman's donky kick. His light punch projectile moves fast but hits once and lightly, mid punch proj. is slower but hits 3 times, the hard punch one does 5 hits but moves very slow and is easy to get arround, after each joe leves himself open just like in mm7. The gernade though he tosses while standing and there is less of a window of oprotunity to get hit then it was in 7, but the gernade costs half of a lv 1 special, as does Hammer Joe. He should combo just as good as a standard mvc2 character, though airial raves are a bit hard to pull of in this version, I hope to have that fixed later on (as well my coders are eather out of town and cant get online, or are swamed with other things at the moment)

He should be a very soild beta and my testers have told me he's really fun to play. There will be 6 pallets so anyone who wants to make more can add 6 more to him, extra colors include the Return Sniper Joe collors, megaman colors, black and white, an all back design, and a red one that i loosly based his collors on from 9ball from armored core.
