Ahem. Anyway. You may have noticed that the Castlevania section doesn't have a title image to it. But that's what this contest is for!
Yep, we're looking for a piece of pixel art of one of the Belmonts of the Castlevania series to go there. The winning entries will be put on the main site.
You'll also get a custom title... and first place has the option of getting their sprite comic or website hosted on INC with very few restrictions. (that, and a main page link. :P). This will require discussion. Or something else. First place can discuss it with me later.
Criteria
Your entry will be judged on the following:
a) Shading. Pillow shaded sprites or very inconsistent light sources will not score very highly.
b) Lineart and design - Don't make the lineart messy or the body malformed.
c) Pose - Be original. Or cool. Either's good.
d) Anatomy: This isn't as important, but pay some attention to it. Unless you're going the Super Deformed route....
e) Accuracy - I don't mind the character being drawn in an unusual style, but I have to be able to recognise the Belmont at a glance.
f) Following the rules below - Not doing the below will get your entry disqualified.
RULES - READ BEFORE SUBMITTING OR EVEN STARTING!
a) The final image will be 115 pixels tall. You can either fit the entire character in there or the torso. You can make the pixel art taller if you wish but the final image will be cropped.
b) Belmonts only. And Cannon Belmonts at that. This means the Cellphone Castlevania and the Contra Hardcorps Belmonts are disqualified, as are any non-Belmonts. So no Alucard, Soma, and by definition, this also disqualifies any descendent without the Belmont last name. So that means no John Morris,
Nathan Graves, etc.
c) No minor characters. Just the playable ones please :P
d) Any art style is acceptable.
e) You have a max of 16 colours for the pixel art. Yes, i'm serious. :P
One of those colours is transparency. So that gives you 15 colours to use.
f) Full clothing please. :P
g) Fairly obvious, but the character's head has to be facing the viewer.
If you have a really cool pose that requires the head to be in another direction, PM me.
h) Mods can submit but they can't get first place. Their entry can still go on the site how-ever.
Pre-empting Questions
Q: Can I have a list of Belmonts?
A: A few examples:
Simon Belmont, Richter Belmont, Christopher Belmont, Juste Belmont, Trevor Belmont, Julius Belmont, Sonia Belmont, Leon Belmont.
Q: Which version of Simon Belmont do you want?
A: Any version. His redesign, his retro look, Simon's Quest, hell, even the fudgly Arcade version. The same applies to the other Belmonts.
Hell - if you really want to be silly and just for giggles - Even the Captain N Simon Belmont. But it'd have to be REALLY good to get up :P
Q: Can I sprite Sonia Belmont?
A: While not strictly Cannon, she's been referenced enough to at least be Semi-Cannon. So, if you want to, yes. Don't overdo the breasts though ;p
Q: 16 colours? What the hell? I can't sprite with 16 colours!
A: It's easy. Even for pixel art. Take a look at old PC games and see how they did it.
Other Crap
The best pieces will go on the site with a random image generator. You'll receive full credits plus website linking in the FAQ.
You can put title text in the image as well if you want but that isn't a requirement and won't affect marks.
Google's pretty good for reference images. Or even the sprites themselves.
I am the judge, and the mods can give their opinions if they wish.
Feel free to post work in progress sprites to get opinions off me or the other members.
Closing
The final submission date is June 21st. The amount of pieces that will go on the site will depend solely on how good people are. :)
