View Full Version : Epic Freeware Games Thread

Tox Edit: No generic, million of a kind MMORPGs/flashgames/yada yada yada that you could find in five seconds on Google or Newgrounds and such. That's exactly the sort of crap this thread is trying to sift through.

Idort: Your browser has a helpful command called "Ctrl + F". It stops you from being redundant.

Try not to repost games. :p

As we all know, most people will buy EVERY rehashed Nintendo game in existence, but once you mention a PC game, the first reaction is "Does it cost money?". And if you say yes, the result is usually along the lines of "CRAP!!! GET IT AWAY! I DO NOT HAVE ANY MONEY TO SPEND ON GAMES! I CANNOT BUY PC GAME!!! YEAAAAAAAAAAAUGH!!!".

And apart from a few select choices, most freeware games suck and are borderline shameful to play.

So let's help everyone out by providing links to quality freeware games that people can play and still have some dignity.

I'll be quoting most of this from another thread in their words by the way because I couldn't put these any better myself :O

First up is Knytt (http://nifflas.ni2.se/index.php?main=03Knytt). You basically go around an alien world exploring and searching for ship parts so you can go home. Very simple, very beautiful, very ambient. A must play.

Ever get raped violently? Like PRISON RAPE violently raped? Ever feel that you are better than that? Ever want to be THE GUY? Well, I WANT TO BE THE GUY (http://kayin.pyoko.org/iwbtg/) will redefine your standards for difficult. It's THE most brutal game you are likely to ever play. Mike Tyson WILL f#$% you up.

Then you may wish to look into Lyle in Cube Sector (http://indygamer.blogspot.com/2006/02/lyle-in-cube-sector.html). It's a somewhat Metroid/vania clone about this little dude who throws cubes and stuff. Sounds lame as hell, but it's actually kickass.

I'm O.K. (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/I%27m_O.K_-_A_Murder_Simulator) is a shockingly hilarious game made after Jack Thompson's "Modest Video Game Proposal", at which he offered to donate $10,000 dollars to charity if someone made a game where you kill video game developers and piss on their brain stems. It's incredibly hilarious and very fun. Guaranteed to make you laugh if you're open minded and hate Jack Thompson.

Eternal Daughter (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Eternal_Daughter). It's essentially another Metroid/vania knockoff with some really nice graphics and a rather decent story for a freeware game. It DOES get rather cheap at some points, but not overly so.

Cloud (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cloud_%28computer_game%29). So beautiful that if it does not bring a tear to your eye, you have no soul.

Chalk (http://www.konjak.org/chalk.htm) is cute, simple fun. You'll like it.

Synasthete (https://typo3.digipen.edu/index.php?id=986) is a must play. Absolutely beautiful.

La-Mulana (http://agtp.romhack.net/project.php?id=lamulana): Tough but fair, and generally awesome. It was apparently a love-letter to old MSX games, so the graphics are meant to look old-school. The game is awesome though.

The Ur-Quan Masters (http://sc2.sourceforge.net/): A free, legal PC remake of Star Control 2. If you don't have it, get this right now and correct yourself.

CaveStory (http://www.miraigamer.net/cavestory/) is obvious. If you don't have it, go get it now.

Passage (http://hcsoftware.sourceforge.net/passage/) is short and sweet. Good for a quick play.

Noitu Love (http://www.konjak.org/nlove.htm). Click the link, I shouldn't have to say anything else.

Warning Forever (http://www18.big.or.jp/%7Ehikoza/Prod/index_e.html): A boss-rush space shooter. Every time you kill it, it adapts to you. You keep playing until you fail to destroy the boss within the time limit. The boss gets daggum huge eventually; there inevitably comes a point where it's too large to fit on the screen, which is both good and bad (Good in that whatever turrets are off the screen can't shoot at you, bad in that you have little room to manuever).

N (http://www.harveycartel.org/metanet/n.html): A platformer-puzzle game. You want to open the door and get the hell out of the room before it kills you, using your ninja skills (Which consist mostly of jumping and wall-grabbing). The game gets tough in the later levels, where there's always things shooting at you, and the only way to take a moment to breath is to die and restart the room.

Maniac Mansion Deluxe (http://new.bigbluecup.com/games.php?action=search&sterm=maniac+mansion+deluxe&submit=Search%21): If you don't know what Maniac Mansion is, you are required by law to correct your ignorance on this matter. A PC fan-remake of Maniac Mansion, using something akin to a SCUMM engine.

Little Fighter 2 (http://www.lf2.net/) makes for a cute and fun play for freeware fighting. It's not often that a freeware fighting game catches my eye.

I believe Bunny Must Die (http://indygamer.blogspot.com/2006/11/bunny-must-die.html) is a must have. The game and instructions are in Japanese, but it's still easy enough to pick up and play. And if you get stuck, just google for some translations or a walkthrough (the creator of the game is working on translating it, though) It's pretty much a Metroid/vania clone, only you can stop time and rapid fire flame arrow things. The visuals are amazing and the music is nice, so I suggest a play.

Another interesting suggestion would be Syobon Action (http://bootrix2.wordpress.com/2007/12/28/syobon-action-cat-mario-full-game/), an interesting Mario clone designed to be insanely difficult (nowhere NEAR the level of I Wanna Be the Guy, though). It'll throw some of the most random things at you, and because of the nostalgia, you'll find yourself laughing at some of the stuff they change instead of raging. Definitely worth at least looking at.

This list is unable to be complete without POKESHO FIGHTING (http://translate.google.com/translate?u=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.pokesho.com%2Fbattle. html&langpair=ja%7Cen&hl=en&ie=UTF-8). Pokemon fighting, and amazing graphics <3

(Also, while I'm making suggestions, even though they're TECHNICALLY not freeware in their own special way, the free version of Cortex Command (http://www.datarealms.com/) wouldn't be too bad for ya'll to look at either... Also go check out the Aquaria (http://www.bit-blot.com/aquaria/demo.html) demo.)

------------------------------------------------------------------------

So! If you know of anything good, I will add it, and its description to this list to make one singular list of good games that are legal to download online :D

...Screw it. *stickies* If a more competent staff member than I (i.e. anyone) has a problem with this being stickied, feel free to take it down.

Also: Posting a link to newgrounds will generally be punishable by death.

Yahtzee's games (http://www.fullyramblomatic.com/games.htm) are all hilarious and you should play them right now.

Got a fun set of updates for the thread here:

Super Mario XP (http://www.acid-play.com/download/super-mario-xp/) is a game that was made to fuse old-school Castlevania gameplay with old-school Mario gameplay. Crazily enough it manages to pull it off rather well. And unlike most Mario clones I see, the gameplay is smooth and fun.

Neo Sonic Universe (http://www.acid-play.com/download/neo-sonic-universe/) is a decent enough Sonic clone that offers two gameplay modes: The classic gathering of rings and spindashing through loops and the occasional puzzle, or turning the whole thing into a fighting game for some strange reason. It's a decent game, but it'd have been nice if the creator had put in some damn music.

Liero Xtreme (http://www.acid-play.com/download/liero-xtreme/) is an interesting sidescrolling online shooter where you play as little worms in the dirt trying to kill each other. The game features some absurd weapons, such as shooting off miniature Pac-Men, and the Mario Fireball, and once you get the hang of it it gets really fun.

Perfect Cherry Blossom (http://www.acid-play.com/download/perfect-cherry-blossom/) is one of those ridiculously hard Japanese shooters where you can end up with millions of bullets on the screen. If any of you are into that.

Kiki the Nanobot (http://www.acid-play.com/download/kiki-the-nano-bot/) is a 3-D puzzle platformer that handles interestingly. You have gravity centered on wherever you are, so you can walk on walls and jump between gaps that should be a column. It's an fun play for a while.

[EDIT] If you were a fan of the music-maker mode in Mario Paint, then the Mario Paint Composer (http://www.unfungames.com/mariopaint/) is the perfect thing for you. It allows you to create full songs using those super awesome differently toned video game sounds.

Technically isn't freeware (as there is stuff you can purchase with real money in it, but it's relatively useless in the game, so meh) but Maple Story (http://maplestory.nexon.net/) is a game I like to get into on a general basis. Basically a cartoony 2D Platformer RPG, put the backgrounds are visually stunning and the music is pleasant.

You probably need to configure your system (http://indygamer.blogspot.com/2005/06/faq.html) to play Japanese games. I ran into that same problem when I downloaded it.

*falls on the floor, laughing uncontrollably*

Oh wait, you were serious....... >_> Uh...... not sure you should check out the links given for system requirements, they usually show you the minimum and maximum the game can play on. If it doesn't say for a specific game you're trying just ask someone here I guess. XP (when you do check of course XD)

Can't believe no one mentioned:

Seal Online (http://www.sealonline.com/index.html) - 3D Korean styled MMORPG, now in English. Very pleasant music for you when grinding and has a unique "couple" system...

and

Nostale (http://www.nostale.co.uk/) - Basically Maple story in a 3D world... With a pet system where you can remotely control your pet to do various things.

As far as I know, all my XP programs can run on Vista. So I think it can run past system programs without any problems. Although I don't recommend using Vista because of it's massive memory consumption...

It's a general thread for posting of freeware game links, you can't sensor us because it's a genre you don't want to advertise. >_<; I personally really like RPGs, so the list is useful to people like me.

This site (http://www.ferryhalim.com/orisinal/) is a large collection of extremely family friendly games(don't say I didn't warn you). The main advantage of those games is that they all(and there's many of them) are very unique and fun, at least at first.
Their main problem is their absurdly low difficulty level, and by "absurdly low" I mean "you'll probably lose due to lack of patience to continue rather than the lac of lives" in most games. I'm implying that each game in itself has little variety and can end up getting repetitive after a while.
Still, it's a great way to relax, a game collection worth giving younger ones a try of, and a good diversion from "regular" games.

Yes, he can. Because the internet is populated with so many generic bore-bouncathon free MMORPGs that they rival China's population, and that's exactly the kind of crap he's trying to sift through. Or are you saying that you can't have personal intentions when starting your own thread?

If you really want to, go start a thread entitled "Every Generic online RPG Ever"; I'm sure it'll reach 100 pages fairly quickly.

Note: I replaced your instances of the word "RPG" with "MMORPG" because there's a difference; RPGs have structure, character developement, story, and an ENDING.

MMORPGs have grinding, more grinding, more grinding, more grinding, and people who will teabag your corpse when you die.

Chill, I may have phrased that wrong, but you didn't need to go bashing the whole idea out the window. -_-; Anyways, now that you've explained why, (albeit with some hostility) I won't pursue the matter any further.

Not hostility (though I apologise if it came off as that), but purposeful subjectivity; My point was that this thread is entirely subject to LowRes's point of view.

If you want to start a thread about good MMORPGs, feel free to.

Nah, I'm a one online game person. Maple Story's good enough for me. XP It's an MMORPG sure, but it has nice ways to interact and stuff in more social ways when you don't want to play to grind.

Another good site for freeware games is Fun-motion.com (http://fun-motion.com/). This particular site's purpose is to be a list of physics games, right with links and downloads and everything. Just take a look around; The creator of that site really says everything that needs to be said. Games I particulary recommend are Armadillo Run(which is basically a mix of Bridge Builder and Crazy Machines; Too bad the demo is so short and limited), BreakQuest(Best Breakout type game like, ever, again with very limited demo), Powder Game(Everyone knows it, and if you don't, something's not right) and Toribash(to quote myself, "The most unique fighting game ever since the very first fighting game ever made" - too bad I can't get ANYTHING accomplished there as I tend to lose my coordination of things).

Seriously, give some of them a try.

Stair Dismount (http://secretexit.com/games/stairdismount) and Truck Dismount (http://secretexit.com/games/truckdismount) are both pretty fun simulators in which you try to inflict the most amount of bodily harm to a rag-doll, by either choosing a place to toss him off stair cases, or to get hit by a truck.

Pretty fun, especially so to relieve some stress test the... uh... physics... or something.

Off-Road Velociraptor Safari (http://raptorsafari.com/) - Do I really need to say any more?

Nope. I mean, it's a raptor, hunting other raptors, in a car. With a mace on it. And you can do Barrel-Rolls. On top of that, the raptor you play as is wearing a construction helmet and of those orange overalls.
How other to describe it than: EPIC (roadkill)!

Alright ya'll I'm back with a few more entries.

Clean Asia (http://64digits.com/users/cactus/clean_asia.zip) is a strange shoot-em-up/boss-rush game. You play as a dot, and can pick between two styles of play. On one hand, you play the classic "shoot stuff and collect powerups to do more damage" while on the other hand, you deal damage by bashing yourself into things, and attract powerups and shoot them off. The gameplay, graphics, and sound all work well enough together to make this a must-play.

Battleships Forever (http://www.wyrdysm.com/games.php) is an amazing RTS game set in outer space. It takes a while to get the hang of the system, but it's easy enough once you get the hang of paying attention to individual ships. One of the main draws to the game is the ability to create your own ships and units makign the game customizable to an amazing scale.

Polarity (http://www.etc.cmu.edu/projects/igf/) is a platform puzzler that uses the whole magnet-theme. The graphics and concept are amazing, but sadly it is a bit short. Great if you're looking for something quick and fun to play.

Free Web Arcade (www.freewebarcade.com) is a flash game website I use very often in half my classes. It has a huge amount of games, some aren't so great though. It obviously isn't blocked by my schools filter/blocking software, so it might not be blocked on anyone elses.

Not much to report other than Love07 (http://trunks.fireball20xl.com/love/Love07.exe), a tiny little platform game that'll keep you occupied for a bit. It's pretty well done, considering its simplicity.

ROM CHECK FAIL (http://games.lastchancemedia.com/farbs/ROM%20CHECK%20FAIL%20Setup.exe) is by far one of the weirdest but most interesting games I've played in a while. The game plays like all your old NES and Atari ROMs have glitched out and fused together, and are flickering back and forth. The goal of the game is to destroy all of the enemies in a lot, but this is made difficult as the character you play as, what the enemies are, and how the stage looks will constantly be changing. The game is interesting, and it keeps you on your toes, so I recommend a download on this one.

The guy that made this also has two other games called Fishie Fishie (http://www.farbs.org/Fishie%20Fishie%20Setup.exe) (a difficult one button game) and Polychromatic Funk Monkey (http://www.farbs.org/PCFM%20Setup.exe) (A neat little puzzle platformer) that are also worth a quick look, but I got annoyed with both pretty fast.

I've stumbled upon a God among artistic freeware games:

Yume Nikki (http://rapidshare.com/files/106691872/Yume_Nikki_0.10_English_v3.rar.html) (Dream Diary)

And despite the Rapidshare link, it IS freeware. That link is the translated version. There's not much to translate, but it helps you know what the heck you're doing.

Yume Nikki is a game where you play as a little girl, and venture into her dreams (which are filled with some of the creepiest things ever). The whole point is to go into each of the girl's dreams and obtain 25 different abilities able to be used in the dreamworld, and then placing each one within the center of her mind.

The environments are amazing, the music sets a creepy environment, and despite the fact that I am horribly lost I can't stop playing.

La Mulana is absolutely fantastic. (http://agtp.romhack.net/project.php?id=lamulana) It's like Metroid meets Castlevania meets Indiana Jones. Tons of exploring and puzzle solving.

The game is basically a very long love letter to the MSX.

Well I went on a bit of a Freeware Games binge and I come bearing a long list of new and interesting things for you people to play :D

First of all I have the puzzle game Blocksum (http://db.tigsource.com/games/blocksum). I'll start off by saying that this game started off reminding me of Tetris Attack until I figured out that it's nowhere near as easy. A bunch of numbered blocks come up from the bottom of the screen... and the point is to combine blocks to make larger numbers. The only way to clear blocks is to make clusters of the same number in such a way that you need 2 blocks of 3 to clear or 7 different touching 7 blocks to clear. It really puts your math skills to work.

Next we have Karoshi 2.0 (http://db.tigsource.com/games/karoshi-2-0)... the most counter-intuitive game I've ever played. The point of the game is to find a way to kill yourself. Yes, you read that right... the point of the game is to kill yourself. Of course the game makes sure to make that goal horribly difficult for you, and has some extremely unique ways of messing with you. It's pretty fun all-in-all.

Mighty Jill Off (http://db.tigsource.com/games/mighty-jill-off) is one of those games that kind of tricks you into playing it. The opening seems to promise you hot lesbianism if you beat the game, so you feel like you must beat the game period just to see the ending. The game itself isn't that bad. Moderately challenging platform stuff that's sometimes easy to screw up. It's worth at least a look.

I also came upon an interesting Top-Down shooter/survival game called Notrium (http://db.tigsource.com/games/notrium). It lets you choose a race, then makes you lost on an Alien planet collecting supplies to get off. Of course you have to pay attention to your vitals by eating, keeping warm, etc. so it makes for an interesting little game.

Alex the Alligator (http://db.tigsource.com/games/alex-the-allegator-4) is a simple platformer with Gameboy graphics and sound. Simple and fun, and worth the try at least.

Gesundheit! (http://db.tigsource.com/games/gesundheit) is a weird little game with hand-drawn graphics in which you play as an allergy-ridden pig whose goal is to save the world from snot eating aliens by luring them to his alien-eating shark friend. While it's a pretty simple and somewhat glitchy game, I still like it just because of the bizarre-ass concept.

Bonesaw: The Game (http://db.tigsource.com/games/bonesaw-the-game) is an interesting little platformer that looks like it uses the Kirby engine as far as level design goes. It also has lots of puzle and beat-em-up elements. Plus it has Bonesaw McGraw (aka Macho Man Randy Savage) in it. You can't get much mroe hardcore than that.

Torus-Trooper (http://db.tigsource.com/games/torus-trooper) is an interesting little shoot-em-up... it's fast paced and I like the graphics. Not much more to say, though.

Legacy of Flan: Flan Rising (http://db.tigsource.com/games/legacy-of-flan-4-flan-rising) is the ODDEST RPG I have ever played. You play as these little marshmallow things that evolve and crap during fights... it's really hard to describe, so you'll have to try it out for yourself.

And finally, the best game out of the bunch I downloaded recently... An Untitled Story (http://db.tigsource.com/games/an-untitled-story). I haven't played a freeware platformer that had me this hooked since Avi showed me what Knytt was. I LOVE this game. Download it and play.

And with that, I am done.

Oh man do I have some good ones this time around...

Rescue the Beagles (http://db.tigsource.com/games/rescue-the-beagles) is a cute little pixel game in which you play as a little boy or girl who is running around a mountain teeming with people in jumpsuits trying to save Beagle puppies from being caught and euthanized. It takes a while to get used to the controls, but it gets pretty fun once you're into it all.

Super Mario War (http://db.tigsource.com/games/super-mario-war) is quite possibly one of the most interesting multiplayer battle games I have every played. It's essentially a free-for-all battle game with Mario rules. Oh how I wish it had online play, though T_T (despite that, playing against bots is still fun)

The White Chamber (http://db.tigsource.com/games/the-white-chamber) is a BEAUTIFUL point-and-click horror adventure game. I haven't gotten too far into it, but it has captured my attention due to the amazing visuals. This is a must-download if you're into good point and click adventure games.

Counterclockwise (http://db.tigsource.com/games/counterclockwise) is Three-dimensional version of Tron with lasers. I shouldn't have to say anything else. I had to force myself to stop playing this one so I could review the other games I downloaded.

Cubes (http://db.tigsource.com/games/cubes) is someone else's knockoff of Counterclockwise that pretty much works the same without CCW's EMP... but it supports multiplayer. Yes... Online Multiplayer 3-D Tron. I've yet to figure out if you can actually chose who you play against, though.

And last, but certainly not least:

Teeworlds (http://db.tigsource.com/games/teeworlds) is a Soldat-like game only much cuter and much more user-friendly. You pretty much play as frickin' kirbies. Download this game now so I'm not stuck playing with people I don't know ;_;

Teeworlds (http://db.tigsource.com/games/teeworlds) is a Soldat-like game only much cuter and much more user-friendly. You pretty much play as frickin' kirbies. Download this game now so I'm not stuck playing with people I don't know ;_;

Anything by Nitrome (http://www.nitrome.com/) is a great little time-waster. All are immensely creative (except perhaps Mutiny), and are both mini-game distraction and usually difficult full game.

Hello thar and welcome to LowResAtari's Freeware Games Minute. I've got a fresh helping of new and somewhat interesting freeware games to show you all this evening, so I hope you'll enjoy it.

------------------------------------------------------

Tower (http://db.tigsource.com/games/tower) is a Roguelike game using 3-D ASCII symbols (for some weird reason). Otherwise it's basic Roguelike. If you don't know what the Roguelike genre is, I'd suggest you Wiki it before you try this one.

Seven Minutes (http://db.tigsource.com/games/seven-minutes) is a strange, trippy, and rather hard to describe platformer. It's one of those things that you just have to download yourself and judge for yourself (I kind of had to google up a walkthrough for a lot of it so far >.>)

Stargirl and the Thief from the Exploded Moon (http://db.tigsource.com/games/stargirl-and-the-thief-from-the-exploded-moon) is a game that resembles Lyle in Cube Sector, only without the exploration/Metroid-ish elements, and more along the lines of level-by-level Mario-esque gameplay. It's decent enough for a Fusion game. Also fat jokes. Also gigantic freaking weird game name.

Everyone Loves Active 2 (http://db.tigsource.com/games/everyone-loves-active-2) is a strange arena shooter that seems to create a formation of enemies from the words you type in to name it. I'm not quite sure how it works, but I've had fun experimenting with it, despite how basic it is. The graphics are purty, though.

Deaths (http://db.tigsource.com/games/deaths) is an "unexpected crap kills you out of nowhere" type game, but to help you along, it loads the dead bodies of the last 50 people online to die in that level to give you hints about what goes on in the level. I love it just because of that amazing concept.

Fantastic Blood Boy (http://db.tigsource.com/games/fantastic-blood-boy) is a creepy fusion game where you play as some little vampire... thing. The point? Protect this gem from aliens while bathing in the blood of your enemies. Creepy, but surprisingly fun.

And as always, I will now post the one I liked the most at the end:

Jimmy’s Lost His Toilet Paper (http://db.tigsource.com/games/jimmys-lost-his-toilet-paper) is the WEIRDEST puzzle platformer I've played... ever. Each level has a line of toilet paper you have to collect and return to the commode... but it's apparently made of the strongest substance known to man, and therefore can't break. It's crazily interesting and I really suggest a play.

Hello boys and girls, I come yet again with a new batch of interesting Freeware Games. Some of the ones I've got for you today are definite "must-plays" so keep your eyes open and take a look!

Frets On Fire (http://db.tigsource.com/games/frets-on-fire) is a Guitar Hero clone in which the creator has opted to try and make you pick up your keyboard and hold it like a guitar to play the game. It's really dumbed down, and the default music choice is crappy, so I hope you like making your own songs :P

Every Extend (http://db.tigsource.com/games/every-extend) plays like a weird combination of a Shoot-em-up and a chain reaction flash game. It's pretty much a score attack, so it's not as interesting without someone to compete with. The graphics are nice, though.

Plasma Warrior (http://db.tigsource.com/games/plasma-warrior) is a Metroid/Vania type exploration game. I just kinda like it due to the retro feel it has. Don't know much about any further features besides run and shoot, though... as I haven't gotten that far into it.

Paroxysm (http://db.tigsource.com/games/paroxysm) is a Prince of Persia clone... only set in what looks like a slaughterhouse. Not a great download for people who don't like blood squish noises. There's a lot of those.

Vivid Conceptions (http://db.tigsource.com/games/vivid-conceptions) is a puzzle platformer with an interesting feel to it. This is one of those that's hard to explain. It got a little boring for me after a few levels, but it seemed to me that some would like this more than I did.

Plasma Worm (http://db.tigsource.com/games/plasmaworm) is like playing Snake while you're on acid. And also if the controls were a bit different (left makes the head curve left, right curves right... it takes some getting used to, but it's not bad)

Swarm Racer (http://db.tigsource.com/games/swarm-racer) is a Time Attack racing game in which you control an entire swarm of bees. You have to keep the bees together for the whole track, and sometimes it's tricky. It's a neat download.

And last but not least:

Acid Bomb (http://db.tigsource.com/games/acidbomb) is an AMAZING puzzle game that kind of reminds me of Minesweeper... but only if they took Minesweeper and fleshed the whole thing out. Acid Bomb is one of those games that once you start playing, you won't stop until you realize you've been playing too long. This one is a MUST download in my opinion.

So there you have it, folks. Plenty of new games for you all to play. Happy playing! =D

Well hai thar folks. It's been quite a long time since I've made a post around here, and I figured it was about time to get a new one in.

First up we have And Yet It Moves (http://www.andyetitmoves.at/) a classic style platformer... with a bit of a twist of being able to rotate the entire level at command. While the world is rotating, everything is frozen in place, but when it's done, everything is shot downward at the same speed it was going (meaning you can't use it to save your skin... you've got to be smart). The game suffers from lack of music, but the visuals combined with the gameplay make for an interesting experience.

Next up we have Racing Pitch (http://secretexit.com/games/racingpitch)... probably one of the most unique "racing" games I've ever played. It's pretty standard... you have one car that you race around the track as fast as possible... but the car is fueled by your ability to mimic the sound of a race car engine. That's right... to play this game... you have to have a microphone... and babble racing car sounds into it like an idiot. The main game gets rather monotonous after a while, but the game comes packed with numerous other features.

Ocular Ink (http://pistachioproductions.com/dart/) is an interesting game starring a paintbrush-weilding eyeball. The game is played through the mouse mostly, as you use a paintbrush to flick evil body parts into walls to watch them splat into pieces. As far as I know, the main antagonist is a pirate eyeball with an eyepatch... so humor is quite present in this.

Hikkikomori Quest (http://visublog.mechafetus.com/archives/468) is an RPG Maker game starring a socially-inept-weakling-otaku-shut-in named Hikkikomori whose physical strength has atrophied over the course of several years of never going outside. The story follows him going to get food from the local store after running out of his own stocks, but his fear of the outdoors triggers a defense mechanism that makes his imagination go wild, turning an everyday chore into a dungeon-crawling quest. Hits way too close to home to anyone that has anything in common with this guy.

And last but oh so certainly not least:

Iji (http://www.remar.se/daniel/iji.php). Download this game. Right freaking now. Despite the graphics that could've been so much better if this guy had help, this game has some of the most amazing platform shooting gameplay I've played in a while. The story is also open-ended to a certain extent, and so are quite a few other features, so the replay value is high. Plus the music is mostly Chiptune and SID-Metal... you can't get much better than that.

GAME THAT ISN'T FREE BUT DESERVES A MENTION LUGARU!
http://www.wolfire.com/

Probably the most realistic fighting in a fighting game that isn't just pressing buttons in a specific order. There's also the dev-log for Lugaru 2 (that will no longer be called Lugaru 2 but the creator hasn't decided what to call it yet.)

GAME THAT IS STILL ON THAT SITE BUT IS FREEWARE

Black Shades

You play as a phycic (sp?) Bodyguard, defending the white shirted VIP against assasins of all colors. Watch out for riflemen and gunmen who take a while to fire, but too many at once and you're dead. Also watch out for knifers. They're annoying as hell.

Oh. And it has zombies.

The White Chamber (http://www.studiotrophis.com/site/projects/thewhitechamber)

I've mentioned this game before, but I never got sufficient chance to play it until recently, and I beat it. And I can honestly say that THIS GAME IS FREAKING AMAZING AND YOU MUST DOWNLOAD IT. It's a point-and-click adventure game, but it's a great point-and-click adventure game.

You play as a purple-haired chick named Sarah who wakes up in a coffin on a research space station, and through the course of the game you discover the bizarre events that brought her there. Despite the horror-based nature of the game, its really easy to get lost in your desire to further what's happening.

One thing, though: if you can't stand disturbing images and short instances of blood and gore... don't play. You'll most likely puke. A lot.

And I will probably not every freaking sleep again after seeing one of the game's easter eggs... *shudder*

Bootfighter Windom XP SP-2 (http://mirrormoon.org/projects/windom)

For those who like Gundam, this might be something you might want to try. It is essentially a mesh of Virtual-On with Gundam-like robots. Each robot, loosely based on a computer OS have differing weapons, skills, and difficulty of use. Fight from afar with a wide range of rifles and missiles or engage your targets close with beam swords. The game even comes with multiplayer support. Note: this game might require some high specs to run smoothly.

Rising Eagle (http://www.rising-eagle.com/)

Freeware class-based FPS.
Decent.
Free.
Online.

Pros:
Scalable graphics. I can even play it on MY piece of crap computer.
Class-based and squad-based with platoon and squad leaders with special abilities.
Platoon leader can call airstrikes (bombs, EMP and smokescreen).
Friendly VOIP, friendly or serverwide text communication.
Partially destructible, epic environments based on real locations and scalable for different game modes and player numbers.
Good controls and customization.
Good weapon mechanics.
Deployable demo mines/remote bombs.
Hacking class that can take over turrets and mines using a logic-puzzle based interface.
Standard melee equipment is a motherfucking sledgehammer.
Mech class with massive weaponry.
Power suits enable massive jumps and survivable landings, as well as sprinting.
Emp weapons that are actually well-implemented.
No autoheal or items, players spawn with one one-use medpack, can either heal to full or nullify the effects of an emp.
No lame spyware like punkbuster.
Achievements and ranking system in-game.
Xfire compatible.
Ingame lobby and serverhosting.
Unlimited download speed on installer.
Cons:
Large 1 Gig client, takes about an hour or so to download.
You need a Gamespy account (Easy to get with a fake e-mail address).
Somewhat complicated controls.
Hacking class requires a bit of learning to do.
Not many players.
Graphics not awe-inspiring (they're sub-par, but they work).I'm having the time of my freaking life playing this. Download now.

In other news: Fred Wood's Love (http://trunks.fireball20xl.com/love/getlove/getlove1.html) game no longer costs money. Download. Now.

Dwarf Fortress (http://www.bay12games.com/dwarves/)

Considering how much I talked about this game I am quite surprised it only occured to me now to play it.
Anyway, the main point of this game is its sheer headcrushing depth and complexity. It'll take many, many weeks for you to learn about everything there is in the game from the creation of the world to running an advanced civilisation of 100+ dwarves smoothly. You start with seven dwarves you give various professions and items to, are set into a place in the worldmap you choose(with various different terain types ranging from various stone types over water, aquifiers and clay to magma and bottomless chasms) and can start mining out your fortress in any way you want.
The problem with the gameis that there is a lot of minor bugs(like dwarves not noticing when things are on fire, thus using them and be lit on fire themselves, or catapults only hitting things on their own Z-level), but they don't distract from the game experience too much.

Though, if there is anything I need to prove to you that this game is great, then it's this Let's Play. (http://fromearth.net/LetsPlay/Boatmurdered/)

And remember - losing is fun!

Dyson (http://www.dyson-game.com/)

I just recently found this; it's like a RTS-style Risk. Your goal is to assimilate various "asteroids" with virus-like spores. Each asteroid has different stats which influences your army's various attributes. It's rather short I will admit but it's quite interesting, to say the least. It would've been awesome if it supported multiplayer support.

Phantasy Star Online Blue Burst (http://www.gemaga.com/2008/04/07/how-to-play-any-version-of-phantasy-star-online-for-free)

I found the private servers. :D Basically, this neat little program has Episode 1 2 and 4 bundled for online use with your PC. Pretty true to the GC versions (as far as I can tell), you can freely play the game instead of having to pay, since it's privately owned. (Of course, remove this if this breaks any rules, but I don't think it does)

Some things to note when you first log on is you login straight to the lounge area. You must create or join parties at the central service counter to enter the gameplay itself, you can also make the party private or public by putting or omitting a password to the play. To engage in text messages press the spacebar, then type your message. To change control schemes, you must do it in-game, either in the lounge or in the play itself, but not before.

Alrighty... so it's been a while since I've updated with anything interesting (mostly because there hasn't been much on the freeware circuit lately), but I managed to scrounge together some rather interesting games this time around none the less.

From Primordial Egg (http://forums.tigsource.com/index.php?topic=3764.0) is a platform game where you control a dinosaur that has been hatched on an archaeological excavation site. The whole game consists of killing and eating the archaeologists that are trying to kill you with rocks, pickaxes, shovels, and other dig site tools. And as you eat more bodies, you evolve and grow larger and stronger. It can get kinda hard, but it's pretty fun.

Verge (http://kyle.nfshost.com/view.php?id=45) is a game from the maker of Bonesaw and Everyone Loves Active where you play as a small imp who apparently has the power to incarnate himself into a dark plane of existence when he dies. The game consists of solving platforming puzzles by switching back and forth between these two planes by killing yourself and then bringing yourself back to life. It's a neat game in my opinion.

Ropor (http://www.retroremakes.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=120&t=12357) is a one-button physics-based time attack game by a member of the Retro Remakes forum (Great site by the way. Go check it out. (http://www.retroremakes.com/)) You play as a little robot and swing from pegs trying to nab items to open rifts in space-time. Weird concept, but a fun game once you get used to it.

Joust 3 - Revenge of the Lava Troll (http://www.iterationgames.com/main.html) is an amazing remake/addition to the classic Joust series from the NES era. Sadly, it's a rather short 7 levels long, but the game is still fantastic as it takes Joust's gameplay to a much higher level than before.

And last I bring you Auditorium (http://www.playauditorium.com/), a beautiful music-based flash game in which you have to manipulate a flow of particles to small canisters that create different parts of a song as you fill them up. I was in awe that such a gorgeous-looking game could possibly be done in flash.

Some advanced notes to point out for this game:

You can literally customize this sucker to your hearts content, in fact, the GMs have a whole section devoted to game mods, skin mods, music mods, you name it! And all that nifty music you hear in-game is within easy reach in the ogg files when you download the game files on the first startup of the game.

The possibilities to this game are nearly endless. I'm currently editting a character texture to resemble Iron Man. XD

Just so people know, tis is a game where you spelunk with randomly generated levels, tons of items, and the most realistic platforming I've ever seen. Just tiny details like the shopkeeper blasting you with a shotgun if you try to steal or you dropping your item if you lose your balance, or being able to throw quite literally anything at an enemy.

Clockwords (http://clockwords.us/) is by far one of the most amazing word games I have played in a loooong time. It's a defense game in which you type out words to shoot the letters of the word at mechanical spiders that are trying to take pages out of a book of inventions. You're basically allowed the freedom to type WHATEVER word you can think of (provided it is within the dictionary... I think they run off the dictionary.com database, considering the dictionary.com word of the day does double damage).

The catch is that if you use the letters that are in the chambers at the bottom of the screen, you do more damage to the spiders. And you can change your inventory of chamber letters, eventually getting different letters and different types of materials for them to be made out of.

I'm having an absolute blast with the game, so if you're a fan of word games (or even if you're not, really)... you should play this now.

Gang Garrison 2 (http://ganggarrison.com/). (v.2.1)

An "8-bit" side-scroller demake of Team Fortress 2.

Gameplay is extremely simplified, so Firebugs (Pyros) are stuck with the flamethrower with a airblast feature and Rocketmen (Soldiers) have only a rocket launcher.

Yes, names are changed while characters and weapons are relatively the same. Sprites may not be exact, but they're recognizable. But if you do have a problem with that, there are mods to visually match the official game and mods to even alter the gameplay.

Apparently even the official TF2 makers (http://www.teamfortress.com/post.php?id=2479) are aware of this game.

There is no singleplayer mode (botmatch), meaning that you need an internet connection to play this game.
