I recommend getting rid of the spud'nik section altogether, leaving the smeg head section for anything that may not fit, and if you're going this direction then you should go either the whole way or not at all. Stopping people from using innocent little acronyms like LOL (fine, LMAO and STFU are a bit much) while having a forum allowing people to 'Go nuts! Do nots! Donutters! It's elephantastic!' is rather contradictory.

When Firefox 2.0 comes out, there will be no excuses whatsoever for misspellings, as well, on a sidenote.

EDIT: I still recommend that you all LEARN TO TYPE PROPERLY (say YES to contradictory statements)

Reading internet forums is sometimes simillar to watching mainstream TV.

Frankly, I don't. I don't care if the forum has anime fans, video game fans, or what-ever.

It still doesn't mean I need an idiot-speak translator everytime I want to read a post.


And you know what? The announcement seems to have worked. People are starting to use Captial Letters, starting to take more care and attention at spelling, and I haven't seen any lol's around.

As for Spudnik. Gone. This isn't an excuse for people to spam up Smeg Head, forum games may still be made in there though.

The point of Spudnik, was so people could get spamming instincts out of their system. Maybe it worked. Maybe it didn't. We'll just see if all the other forums get clogged with crap.

Theres a difference between using "lol" as a response to someone on a chat program, than putting in the middle of a sentance on a forum.

Anyway, if english isn't your first langauge, but you use a latin/greek (I'm too tired to think correctly) based alphabet, then you should still know how to capitalise. It's not really even that hard. However, if you're from Spain and you mispell "exuberant" (or if you're from an english speaking country, for that matter), nobody should freak out at you. This is more for the people that mispell "it," or "you" when english is your first langauge. And now I'm beginning to talk/type in circles. Whoo!

Personally, I approve of Spud'nik's removal. It was getting out of hand. A spam forum's not the best idea. Perhaps a single spam thread (with a limited number of posts per timeperiod) would be more controlled, yet let people get the spam out of their systems.

Anywho, I occasionally use "lol" in my posts, but in a way that's sorta grammatically correct, if possible. I usually put it as its own sentance or in the begining and followed by a comma. Example of such usage is below.

Lol, yeah like using l33t is grammatical in any sense of the word... >>;

Or:

Lol! Oh man, my Favic-speak example was just crap in a hat...

But hey... If I can crank out fully-formed sentances with proper spelling, punctuation and capitalization in a text message using my CELLPHONE, then dammit, people can type properly in a forum where they're not rushed and are using an actual keyboard!

Well, it's a good reason to ignore him... But if he's bugging YOU then you can PM him and ask him to write correctly. You can even add it with your post, as long as your post as contest relevent to the topic it's in as well.

I don't really mind too much if people talk like morons sometimes. SOMETIMES. If They Favic-it-up then, I do have a problem. (Even then, the guy was spanish, but he still was pretty dumb...)

Yeah, I for one don't think we'll wind up banning people over, stuf leik dis lol. In any event, if you see someone doing it, just politely ask them to stop. Tell them that this isn't IM, and they can take their time to type.

That, or to log on to a chatroom. The whole virtue of a BBS is that you have all the time in the world to carefully consider what you're going to say. It shouldn't take you less than 15 seconds too make a post.

If anyone talks to me using text message language or just type 'LOL' in MSN\AIM conversations to me, I stop talking to them unless they're a good (real) friend. It annoys me so...

As far as typing skills go... compared to Favic and several others, I think my betta has better typing skills, and he never typed. Nope, he just takes food from my hand, plays tricks, and nips at me whenever I gotta put my hand in the tank for some reason or another. He's a good boy and he's already learned to recognize me. My other fish have yet to do that. Tango, my bumblebee catfish, sorta recognizes me, but Raiden (the betta) definetly does. He's a smart fish.

Favic claimed many, many times that English is his native language. He was born and raised in Virginia and claimed that English is his native tongue. Heritage is therefore no excuse.

Though after seeing his site and poorly-written message, I started to worry about the kid, 'til Soviet said he got the e-mail "threat" that Favic was gonna really let all hell break loose and make fun of the lot of us. Favic's just an attention whore with a really thick skull. If he is mentally disabled, which I won't totally dismiss such an idea, then he's still got quite the attitude and therefore still has no excuse. If he's allowed to get away with such a defense, then it'll just show others that they too can get away with it. It didn't work for Megaman14 aka Hakura, or for Megamantn on the MMN, then it certainly will NOT work for Favic. Disability does not influence stupidity. Disability does not cause or encourage stupidity. Stupidity is a learned behaviour.

So really, Blackbeltdude... I understand your concern and whatnot... but don't encourage the Disability Defense. It irks the hell outta me. 'Specially when such a defense is the Autism Defense and is used by parents to excuse bad behaviour.

Hoo boy, what a rant! Back to the topic...

Typos and minour spelling and grammatical errors I tend to overlook as I don't have the best English skills either. No one's perfect unless they have a dictionary and style guide on hand all the time. Heck, there are alotta words I dunno how to spell and some that I do know how to spell, but I use the incorrect spelling as it's force of habit. I also use alotta slang, hence why I always spell "probably" as "prolly." It's also less keystrokes and I'm lazy like that. Basically, I type as I speak.

Slang I usually overlook, same with minour spelling and grammatical errors. But c'mon... it's really not that hard to hold down Shift and make a capital letter at the begining of a sentance! Punctuation is mebbe an extra keystroke, so that's not too hard either. I don't care if you use a hunt-and-peck style of typing, that's still no excuse. I use two fingers to type, I haven't ever memorized the keyboard, yet I can churn out paragraphs with proper punctuation and capitalization within minutes at an 80-120 wpm typing speed.

English speakers therefore have absolutly no excuse for bad typing. And if their posts look real bad and such... I can only imagine how their teachers act when they're handed an essay that's almost damn near impossible to read and understand. Spell checker prolly hates 'em with a burning passion.

Speaking of knowing the layout of the keyboard, I recommend that people find some time in their lives to learn it. Eventually it becomes second nature, and you can look onscreen for typos while not taking forever to pound out a paragraph.

For example, thkis is me typing without looking at my computer acreen.

It's definetely doable, but it takes time to go back and edit, and not everything gets caught all of the time.
