From http://arstechnica.com/news.ars/post/20060607-7009.html:

Wii's classic games to be priced less than US$10

Nintendo President Saturo Iwata spoke yesterday at a Japanese marketing event (Japanese source), revealing information about "virtual console" pricing and the Wii's relationship with the DS. Iwata revealed that games for Nintendo's "virtual console" that will allow Wii owners to play old titles on their consoles will be priced at ¥500 and ¥1,000, roughly US$4.50 to US$8.99. For reference, classic retro games for the Nintendo GameBoy sold for upwards of US$35 for some titles, US$19.99 for others. Uptake was understandably low, as gamers were reticent to pay that much for old content.

Retro gaming may prove to be a big boon for Nintendo. Microsoft's Xbox Live Marketplace has already captured the attention of many gamers with games costing 400 to 1,200 Microsoft "points," which translates to US$5 to US$12.50. Nintendo's pricing is roughly competitive with Microsoft's, but the ability to launch with a massive library of retro games could easily overshadow Microsoft's service, which has been anemic in terms of new titles since launch (though we wait in anticipation for Paperboy, Contra, and others). Are gamers more likely to buy Zuma for US$10, or Majora's Mask?

Iwata also talked about ramping up production of the DS Lite from 1.6 million units a month to 2 million. Demand for the system in Japan has been near insatiable, and with a June 11 launch in the United States, the added production will hopefully keep the system on store shelves so it can take advantage of the success of the New Mario Bros. and Brain Age. The system has been a license to print money for Nintendo, with ten games in Japan that have already sold over a million copies.

Iwata talked up the Wii's capabilities in terms of DS connectivity, including the ability to share demos and the fact that the DS could also be used as a touch screen controller for Wii games. He also hinted that future DS games will be able to be played on the Wii, with added or expanded content as a teaser.

Downloading DS demos via the Wii is a nice touch, but not that surprising. Being able to use the DS as a touch screen for the Wii, however, offers up the possibility of being able to use the Wii to play DS games on your television. The GameBoy Player was a successful product for the GameCube, allowing gamers to play their GBA games on their televisions, and if the Wii features such an ability, Nintendo has a better chance of converting DS gamers into Wii owners.

From the picture Iwata is painting, it's clear that the Wii is designed to profit not only from new games sales but also by working closely with the DS, and placing an emphasis on inexpensive classic games purchased online. It's hard to underestimate the worth of Nintendo's back catalogue, and the addition of classic Sega and Turbografx titles adds considerable appeal for gamers who cut their teeth on Nintendo's early consoles.

Unfortunately, we still don't know when the Wii will launch or how much it will cost. Iwata said the launch date and final pricing for the Wii will not be announced until September.

Now all we need is for the retro games to be transferable to the DS. Now that would be interesting!

Nice to see they are doing DS/Wii linking without the need of cables likethe whole NGC/GBA link-up stuff that didn't get to far for that excat reason: cables.

Well that's all cool and stuff, but you can go to a gamestop or a fleamarket and get Duck Hunt with the Super Mario Bros. combo pack for under 10 cents nowadays. I bought a Castlevania retro game for the GBA for 20 dollars and no matter how many times I but my wallet in the washer it still feels dirty. I am not sure if they'll be able the keep the price at 10 dollars, but the good thing is it'll be over the internet, so they can rise/drop the prices of their products quickly.

The DS connectivity is making my mouth water. I had to be the first kid to have a DS on my block and I did get it. Maybe now I'll be the first kid on the block that needs to get a Wii, LOL. I think it would be a great marketing strategy if they can find a way to transport the A/V of the DS to your television via the Wii. But it's not like the TV screen is a touch screen... You'd have to keep your eyes down on the DS while you play. The only utility that has (in my mind) is for friends or family to watch what you are doing on the TV while you play it on the DS. Oh! and the GBA games, that's good for the TV (as demonstrated with the Gameboy Player). I am interested to see how this demo downlaoding for the DS will go through. I don't know if the DS would have the technology of virtual memory to hold the demo in it, or maybe the Wii will be constantly feeding to demo to it while you play, I dunno and I don't understand anything about those things.

Anyways, it's a good move by Nintendo to include the retro games and the DS connectivity, AMIRITE?

Unless your Wii falls off your shelf... Then your entire library of retro games is even more history than it once was.

They build consoles to last these days.

Here is a list of battle injurys sustained by all the consoles I have ever owned. All of which functioned after.

Fallen down stairs- Every single gameboy. The original, the mini, the colour, the advance, the SP, the DS.
- Nintendo 64
- Gamecube
- XBox (Well, let's be fair, the XBox can survive a nuclear holocaust)
- Every single SEGA console

Fallen off of high shelf- Playstation 1, 2, slimline 2, gamecube, XBox, every single SEGA console

Having a TV fall on it (Dont ask)- XBox

Being vomited on (Dont ask) - Slimline PS2, XBox, N64

Survived being stepped on- EVERYTHING.

Suffice to say, I have NEVER had to buy a replacement computer except for a Megadrive...I lost my cables. FUCKING CABLES!

I dunno, Gameboys have strudy plastic and all, I've had ants crawl inside of my Gameboy Color before while I used to play Pokemon (Gotta catch 'em all my ass, that ant flew across the screen FAST...).

The Wii just looks fragile, sorta like the PS2 did, I recall my PS2 power port in the back getting crushed, I had to order a new port, seeing as I was not about to buy a new one. But it looks like the Wii will have a thin plastic so it will have optimal room for the circuitry inside. It would be awesome if they could have a Ipod-like plastic covering on it though, Ipods have a nice protective covering that's thick and glossy and just nice to look at.

They should make computers like the Ipod.

Ipods will still work if you run them over.

The screen wont, but the thing itself will!

You could all perhaps look after your games consoles XD

One thing is that the Wii has flash memory, meaning that there isn't a hard drive to break when throwing down the stairs (like PS3 and the 360, and my iPod mini. Thank fuck for warranty)

Yeah, I saw that review where they ran the iPod nano - something like a 40ft drop was the only thing that killed it, after being run over...

Wow, some of that is just crazy...like that iPod nano thing...

Well, I've dropped my SP and DS time and time (i'm clumsy at times) and they have survived many of those falls, which were mainly on hard ground.
Lots of my nintendo consoles have also taken falls from tripping over wired and making the whole darn thing come tumbling over, but they survived.

I'm pretty sure that whatever nintendo did to their previous consoles to make them durable, you can bet on it that thw Wii will be the same.

Maybe they could make them like laptops (jump on a laptop several times and no scratches!)

Uhh... Not to get off topic, but the Apple Laptops ARE made of iPod plastic, if you chaps haven't ever seen one.

But to get back on topic, it would be cool if you got bundle deals with games on the Virtual Console thing they'll set up, like getting Supermario Bros. 1, 2, and 3 for a low price and stuff. It's all in the workings though
