View Full Version : Ok I have a serious question about MMZ and ZX series
This has been bugging me for a while and it has to deal with both making a game and a sprite ripping.
The thing is I always wondered that what if the saber swings from all the melee type characters are actually apart of the sprite.
I tested in both game that like if you would dash and swing your saber while about to fall, it would show the falling sprite alot with the same slash that was from the dash.
This is not the only thing, like if you slash in mid air and fall when your close to the ground it would show like a standing sprite but with the saber barely vanishing from the air slash.
Now just a hunch that I don't think the slash sprites of the saber and the sprite character are both together but rather seperated.
What is everyones thought on this because I was thinking of making the actual blade slash a seperate sprite for a game so that would be the the only thing to inflict damage on the enemy than rather the character itself?

It is. The sword was always separated form the sprite as a layer. So was Zero's hair in MMZ. In other words. It was actually the saber that did damages not the sprite.
Thanks for answering.
Ok so like I have been trying to make a decent Mega Man Zero/ZX engine using game maker 6 and I would like to know how could like make that happen?
Before I had the saber sprites and the character sprites together and it just wasn't as real as I wanted it to be so how would I make it so that if for example Model ZX does a slash pose then his saber would appear at that time?

Take what-ever animation file you have for your character, and duplicate it.
Then, go back to the base sheet, carefully cut out the character. If you've got a colour replace function, it makes the process a whole lot easier. You want the entire sheet to look like this:
7970
Copy and paste this edit onto the copied character animation file (im not sure how Gamemaker does animations, so im attempt to be as broad as possible.)
When you've got all the animations sorted, blank fill the space where the chracter is, and set the new animation file to be on top of the old one at all times. Use the new one for collision detecting for sabres.
It's the method I use for swords. Gareentees only the sword can hit.
I don't use gamemaker, but this method should work. Hopefully I've just explained it correctly. Dislexia sucks as far as typing and speech go XD.

Actually, X4 and X5 did the same thing. Zero's hair and saber where separate sprites.
However, semi-recently, Zan Sidera (And I think Mr. Dimond) found out that X6's Zero's saber ISN'T separate from his sprite.
The more you know. :P

Ahh thank you so much. Although it was a little confusing but I think I get it.
Basically copy the sprites of the character with the saber and then I cut the character "out" or just color him all full and use the original character and replace that cut out with the character so the saber sprites and characters sprites are not the same?
Ok like can you break that down?
Just so I understand fully and THANK YOU AGAIN!:D
@blackbeltdude: hmm that is a bit interesting and actually I always thought that the sprites for X 6 where together.
Capcom must have got lazy on X 6.
