It depends. I've seen people start with Cutman. I started with Bombman. I've seen a person who did a speedrun start with Gutsman.

I start with Cutman, then repeat Elecman's stage in order to get the magnet beam early on. Helps for Gutsman's level, (I've only gotten past those ****ing lifts a couple of times) and Iceman's if you need the help.

Theres a lot of ways to ACTUALLY do it.
(listes in order of highest damage.)

Gutsman: Hyper Bomb, Thunder Beam
Cutman: Super Arm, Fire Storm, Rock Buster
Electricman: Rolling Cutter, Super Arm
Iceman: Thunder Beam, Rolling Cutter
Fireman: Ice Slasher
Bombman: Fire Storm, Rolling Cutter

Copy Rock:

Rock Buster: 3rd best way to win. Not too hard, but his buster is better than yours.
Rolling Cutter: 2nd best way to win. The fact that it homes back in on you is great. Copy is stupid with this weapon.
Thunder beam: 2nd best way to lose. I don't care how good you are, Copy rock will kick your ass with this weapon.
Ice Slasher: This tends to be an equal match, although its better to use different weapons.
Fire Storm: 4th best way to win. The shield is a double-edged sword, Copy has one too.
Hyper Bomb: BEST WAY TO WIN!!! Copy rock is an idiot while using this weapon, all you really need to worry about is collision damage.
Super Arm: BEST WAY TO LOSE!!! Copy rock can inflict damage via collision, you cant.

Bubble Battery:

Weapons to use: Super Arm, Rock Buster

When you first enter, use super arm to inflict damage, but DO NOT USE THE LAST BLOCK. This is an important tool to avoid damage. Switch back to Rock Buster and rapid-fire at the battery until it is defeated.

Wily Mech:

Part One: Use Fire Storm's shield on the mortar to inflict multiple hits in quick time.
Part Two: Use Rolling Cutter or Thunder Beam. Arch Rolling Cutter so you can get three hits per scissor. Thunder Beam hits twice, if you like using second best.

Despite my best efforts, Megaman I is never, ever easy. I've just about memorized how to move at every screen in the game, though.
