Discuss.

Personally, I think Ninty have kicked themselves in the nads with this when it comes to puns andjokes about it, which we will be hearing for the next 5 years -_-

BUT, if this console turns out to be the "revolution" it promises to be, then no one will care. Besides, no one's complained about stupid names like Game Boy ever since, have they? :g-winky:

How Nintendo try to make people think they are a serious competitor in the next gen console war: rename the cool sounding revolution into a name that will have millions of bathroom jokes, puns and all sorts said about it. Excuse the pun but thats that down the bloody drain.

I was seriously considering getting one the other week there, but I'll be damned if im going to walk into a shop asking for a bloody Wii. I mean i know the console isn't just the name but this is no way to get non-gamers into gaming.

Nice one nintendo, you made your console the laughing stock of gaming for the next god knows how many years. Rectify it by immediately saying it was a joke and by shooting all your bloody marketing staff.

I feel like the only person in the world who isn't throwing their toys out of the window about this. :g-hmph:

It's only people's immaturity that is making them mock it :D

I'm not bothered. It's not as though they called it Dreamcast, or Playstation, or named it after a planet or something. [All of which were good coms]
It's a nintendo, and therefore we will get
- Awesome graphics
- Fun games
- Multiplayer carnage that will rival the Crusades
So there's really nothing to worry about.

I for one find "I'm going to play with my piss" awesome.

"In other news, Nintendo decided to rename their console to what will, within ten years, still be the shittest shit ever shat in the VG world, aside Daikatana, Wii. As in We. As in wee. As in piss. Video game playing virgins everywhere rose in protest, sitting back down immediately panting heavily. The fat clots."

Yeah, it's a crappy name (sig aside), but it'll be the games that draw people in. That being said, I've had the opinion that Nintendo's mostly been a pile a crap with the random piece of gold ever since N64, so I'm not going to get the Wii unless I'm really blown off of my feet.

I'll be sticking with the Playstation, thank you very much.

You say it's too crappy not to make fun of? Sure, if you're in the sixth grade or still retain that level of education. I think Nintendo made a good marketing move here. Look at all the people it got talking about it. Don't like the name? Fair enough, I don't really care for it either. Think you just gotta laugh at it? "lol weewee" was old before the first person said it.

Although in that respect it is a good marketing move, with a name like Wii, how many people will take it seriously? In that respect i find that it fails.

i found this on http://blog.wired.com/games/index.blog?entry_id=1467976:
Why not stick with Revolution? Because global branding is of paramount importance. The "Genesis/Mega Drive" days are over. One world, one name. And "Revolution" was never going to fly in Japan, where the word is nearly unpronounceable. The end. If it's a shock to anyone, it's only to those who can't imagine a world beyond their tiny corner of it.

In the comments thread of my original news post, Peter B. pointed out quite well why Wii:

Talking to people that have worked in games retail, you find that normal people can’t/don’t/won’t keep the names of the systems straight. People ask for “PlayStation 360s” and “PlayCubes” and “Mario on Xbox” even though they actually own a GameCube – to them the system names are confusing and completely interchangeable.

This is basically Nintendo trying to create a name and brand that is in no way similar to the others, in order to be distinct in the minds of consumers. They see the ad, they actually retain the correct name, and they go and ask for it at the store.

Also, while it may sound dumb to us, you know that they focus-tested the hell out of it in all three territories and, at the very least, it’s not completely repellent to those focus groups.

"Wii" is just a name, and it does its job well as a memorable symbol for the system. When the name was announced, forums and boards sprung to life debating the name. the best ad is the free kind. everyone will know that Wii is nintendo.

yay, i killed a topic...

There are several problems with that....

1) That means that Nintendo's newest console is automatically steering towards newbies who have no clue what they're talking about, which will undoubtedly tick off their very loyal, but decreasing, fanbase. To keep up with XBOX or even try to gain parity with Sony, Nintendo has to market towards experienced gamers, not with morons (note: by naming the system that, Nintendo's all but saying that their loyal fans are morons),

2) Yes, "Wii" will be distinctive, but not in a good way. Imagine, some wealthy grandparent or parent buying a Christmas gift for their grand/kids..... now, are they going to buy the system that sounds like an epileptic monkey came up with a title for it or will they go for the XBOX 360 or Playstation 3? My money's on one of the other two (with PS3 actually having a slight advantage), and

3) Focus groups are the third lowest form of intelligence on the planet, right above skateboarders and Goths. Saying that "it’s not completely repellent" to a group of people like that isn't a compliment, its downright saying that its a stupid move.

EDIT: And another point. What Nintendo seems to be forgetting is that this generation of systems is going to be a departure from the previous ones due to increased costs alone. While fanboys of each three major systems will be loyal to their own (I can already guarantee that I'll be getting a PS3), for the undecideds its going to be seen as an investment. With the cost of each system and their games, people are going to go in buying what they really and truly believe to be the best system gamewise, astonishing graphics or not. Having a distinctive name will have no effect on the decision whatsoever.

Blitz: precisely, Nintendo isn't aiming towards experienced gamers. It's attracting the millions of gamers who became gamers through EyeToy and Dance Dance Revolution and Brain Training through the DS and as such are making videogames more socially acceptable. By catering for thier fanboys, Nintendo has become victim to missing out on this lucrative market of 'morons' and the Wii and DS are thier reactions. And of course, the morons will be buying the PS3 merely because it's one up from PS2 and LOL it's twice as good, innit, and they're going to take it home and play sequels to FIFA. Twice a year.

Despite the name, I still think that the Wii should promise a bloody decent stage in gaming.

The name doesn't really bother me. At first I was like, WTF?, but now I actually like it. The games look down right awesome. I love the approach Nintendo is taking with the remote. Insead of pressing a to swing a sword, you're actually swinging it. This will add a level of immersion never before seen. I strongly feel Nintendo has the potential to win the console war, even if they said they "dropped out" of the competition. And, please, no more Wii jokes. They are REALLY old. Me and my friends at school have been joking about it for the past week.

After conclusive investigation, I have made some revelations

This computer has been crafted by Jesus himself, as some sort of divine compensation.
XBox 360- A glorified XBox, which in itself is a good computer, but has barely any good games.
PS3- Good computer, slightly more games than the 360, costs more than buying a desert eagle 5 times. For some reason I find something terrifying about being able to kill that many people for the price of a PS3.....
Wii- Made by Jesus, hence the divine compensation. Two landmasses of rubbishness, and one glowing bastion of awesomeness amidst a sea of mediocrity and shit.

The following people will be buying a Wii
- People with a modicum of sense

The following people will not be buying a Wii
- People who can't afford it
- Cunts
- Assholes
- Idiots

Yeah. Any half-brained twit would know that the Wii is far superior. Sony freekin copied off Nintendo with the motion-sensor idea. Where did Sony get the Analog stick? Nintendo. The PS1 controller originally didn't have any analog sticks. Then realizing how good the analog stick was for the N64, they copied it. And you can also see resemblences of an SNES controller in a PS1 controller. Also the PS3's logo is a complete rip off the Spider Man 2 logo. And 500 flippin dollars for it? I won't be buying it. Wii>360>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>PS3

GG Hendrix
16-05-06, 12:04
None of those reasons are good enough reasons to hate the PS3.
I dont give a shit if sony have repeatedly adapted their own stuff totally based on Nintendo's stuff.

A) It makes things better for the people who play their games
B) They'd be idiotic twats not to.
Yes, confound them for wanting to make their computer as good as possible, confound them and their cunning money hording schemes.

It costing an arm and a leg, and having barely any good games for it is ALMOST good enough reason to hate it.

And anyone who thinks the 360 is better than the PS3 is wrong by default!

360 and good in the same sentance is a oxymoron.

When a console can't even play the most basic arcade games without overheating (I witnessed this at the lan I go to), you know its shite.

PS3 is far out of my price range, and since the only decent game announced for it is MGS4... nah. Definately. Nah. The PS2 was a disappointment frankly after the PS1.

Wii for the win. It's the first console that screams "BUY ME BECAUSE IM FUN!" rather than "BUY ME BECAUSE I GOT THE GOOD GRAFFIX!" since the retro age. The last console that said that to me was the GBA.

Nintendo are on a winner. And to think people bashed the controller when it first came out - now everyone's praising it. Funny eh? =D

Dont forget, the PS2 has Ico and Shadow Of The Colossus.
Fifty years from now, within arguments, I will still be putting forth the "Colossus" card, but this is only because I can see Ico being beaten within 50 years :p
The very notion that within 50 years someone will have done a Colossus beater is inconcievable.

Wii- Look at the new Mario. You mean I get to fly around smacking things in the face, jumping from fully navigatable asteroid to another, doing tripple somersaults and backflips, while collecting stuff that MAKES THE JOYPAD MAKE A SPARKLING SOUND?! Fuck, where do I sign?

I'd have to go with the Wii. I'm only saying the 360 is good because of CoD 2, GRAW, and Halo 3. Nintendo, unlike Sony and Microsoft, isn't trying to impress people with graphics, system specs, high-end processors, and all that stuff. Some people may not like the fact that the Wii won't have HD, crazy graphics, *technobabble* etc, but hey. The games are actually FUN

I personally though the PS2's games libury was more impressive than the PSones. All I really like on the PS1 was the namco and capcom stuff, where as the PS2 also has some nice Sega and SNK stuff, and is definatly worth getting for all it's retro complilations, I reckon. I'll have to just give in and get one eventally, as there is a lot on it I like, even if I still hate the consoles design and controllers.

I think a whole lot of people have been put off by the PS3, however. It really hsn't interested me in the slightest. Neither has the 360 as much. The Wii is the best thing to happen to the gaming world since the Dreamast, though.

To gaga- Really?
I found the PS1 had millions of good games, and a few shit ones (LOADS of shit ones in it's dying days) and the PS2 to have always had a mixture of
Shit- Infinite
Ok- A few racing games, some wrestling games [what? Dont look at me like that! The TV show is crap as shit, but holy hell, WWE make WELL fun games!]
Good- Weeeee, Dynasty Warriors :D
Absolute magnificence of Godlike proportions- Not that many. But to note we do have Katamari and Shadow Of The Colossus

Roughly 40% of my fave games are on the PS1. A colossal mixture of RPG nonsense (Breath Of Fire 3,4, FF7 and 9) violent nonsense (Tenchu 2, MGS) and UTTER nonsense (TOMBI! Ape Escape! Omega Boost! [To this date the most brilliant 'Huge Robot VS Everthing' game made]) and a ton of other crap.

And Alundra/Vagrant Story, 2 of my "liek most favest games ev0r"

But to the topic-

The most tremendously annoying thing about this new generation, and it makes me want to vomit blood almost as much as the phrase "new/next generation" is that I am going to end up owning a 360, a PS3, and a Wii eventually, as A) it's been written in stone four centuries ago that I am eventually going to waste money on every console made in my lifetime B) My XBox wont last forever C) God damn you Square. DAMN YOU I SAY.

Ok, Im sorry for this gravedigging of monumental proportions but although more people are seeing the greatness of the Wii, The name is still burned on by most of you who replied.
The name is the best possible name Nintendo could have ever CONSIDERED for naming this console. Not only will it attract the new gamers (as previously mentioned) but the name Wii has many symbolic and pratical uses.

1) Nintendo released that the i in the word wii can be used to show people coming together to play it.Also, they resemble the controllers.

2) The reason the Wii did SO well at the focus groups is because it worked in every language. No matter what you speak its easy to say "Wii". The word is universal and easily sounded.

If you are new you like the name. If you are an older gamer than Nintendo expects you to have enough maturity to find good reasons for the name and not dwell on "OMGZ!!!!11! IS NAMMD WII!!!!!1! LAWLORZZZZ!!!!111!!!1!" Honestly, if you are THAT ill minded then DONT buy it! Its your loss.

PS. Would you rather have the Plagarized System 3 or the worst computer in microsoft history? I didnt think so...

I'm sorry but I'll stick by saying the Wii is a horrid name of a console. Though no console manufacturer has actual come up with constent good names, all expect for SEGA, Master System, Mega Drive, Game Gear, Saturn and Dreamcast, though they sound much better with the SEGA at the beginning. The Wii would sound good if it was a handheld, not so much a home console...

The whole i think representing people coming together, sorry I just don't believe it, they just wanted to cover up the fact they couldn't "WE" because the womens entertainment group already had it : P

And sooooo many made up words can be used instead of the wii, the words "mama" and "papa" are also used in most countries (if not all)

That doesn't mean I won't be getting the console, far from it, I'm just at odds with the name.

Gaga: Youre right about the marketing idea of the wii, I think Nintendo covered the name up well.

Side note:I wont buy a PS3, thats a fact. But the 360 really messed up horribly on their systems marketing. (Luckily at the end they force marketed it as much as possible) If the 360 messed up as much as it did then they should have scrapped it and started on making a system so kickass that Nintendo and Sony would fall to their knees at its awesomeness. Now that I know Bill Gates is slowly giving up command of Microsoft, I think he just wanted to finish up on that last go. By the next generation of systems, he may well be gone from Microsoft.

Why? My sped fix has worn off. Back in the day, a round of MK64 was all I needed. Then it was SSBM, F-Zero GX, Sonic Rush. Now, Wildfire looks so insanely fast, the immersion the controller gives you could give you motion sickness in a matter of seconds.

Super Mario Galaxy looks awesome, but what I really want to play is Sonic Wildfire and Excite Truck.

Why? My sped fix has worn off. Back in the day, a round of MK64 was all I needed. Then it was SSBM, F-Zero GX, Sonic Rush. Now, Wildfire looks so insanely fast, the immersion the controller gives you could give you motion sickness in a matter of seconds.

Now that's just bloody awesome.

As I said before on the Sonic next gen topic. It feels more like your driving a car rather then a super fast hedgehog in Sonic Wildfire, still looks intresting mind you...

Unicron will be doing the review, myself and the death turtle will be offering assistance, as he's only a toy and therefore cant move without us moving him.
