View Full Version : Contest-GIF Animation Attack!

I got approval from Blackbelt Dude to run this contest, so lets get moving.

Alright, sprites for me are akin to animation; if you have fun making sprites, you should have fun animating them as well.(I know I do) So I wanted to host a contest seeing how well every one here on Sprites INC can animate GIFs.

Alright, for this contest each contestant makes a Fighting animation. It can be of two people fighting, four people, one against a horde, anything! You get the idea. You can use any style, from any system, or just make up your own sprites; it’s up to you. You can have a set fight, or just have the guys keep pummeling each other in a loop, what ever you can come up with. Now, if you are going to enter, let me lay down some rules:

1. Do your own work. I better not find out one of you been stealing or having others do your work.

2. If you use somebody else's sprites (be it heavy edits or customs) make sure you give credit.

3. When entering your animation, include the sprite sheets you used and backgrounds.

4. You are allowed to squeeze in up to two animations. Once you enter them, you can't edit them again. So be sure what you have is what you REALLY want. (It is perfectly OK to get feed back on your own thread, just not in the contest thread.)

5. All animations are in a GIF format, so no flash tonight.

6. Contest ends on April 7, so get busy!

Judging:

Each animation will be judged by me on the fallowing criteria:

Action: This tells you the pace of the fight. Having highs and lows is just like a rollercoaster; the more you have the more exciting it is. Good rhythm puts some positive points in this category. (You just can't have it like a final fantasy fight where one attacks, then the other...)

Sprites: This tells you the quality of sprites you choose, and if their actions are distinguishable. If you can't tell what’s going on, you might want to rethink your fighters.

Steadiness: This category grades how well you can animate. You better not have guys vibrating and taking twenty foot strides. It better be smooth like laxative.

Originality: This grades your over all direction of the animation. Does your fighters have cool moves, use sneaky tactics, or creatively use the environment? If not, you might to toss a few curve balls in.

Bonus: Did you go above and beyond the call? Like having animated backgrounds, scene changes, or different camera angles? Well dammit, you're getting some extra points buddy! Of course, if you lack a background or do the same thing over and over again, you can get some negative points too.

Each category will get a value from 0 to 20. Bonus, on the other hand goes from -10 to +10. The scores are then added up, and given a final value. The largest final value will obviously be declared the winner.

Examples of what I would call ok/good animations:

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v224/JosephS/DustTop.gif

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v224/JosephS/FOOTER.gif

(I know I used NES sprites, but you can impress me if your don't fallow my path.)

Alright, stop reading and start planning!

hmm.. This'll give me a reason to do some more RMX:TC sprites and make a cool little fighting scene(With total randomity.)

If you wish, just make sure you supply a link to the sheet you used. (And if you edited some sprites, make sure you include them in the sheet as well.)

Yeah and actually to make a good Fighting Animation takes a long time

Novacrash
13-03-07, 20:45
What? You think I was being serious? XD, I was just doing that too get some kinda post out of yeh..3 days is a long time when nobody even says they're going too make one..>>

It was a good idea and I didnt want too see it die, lol..my way of doing that was poorly executed though lol.

Many of the people do one, but don't post here, I guess. I'm a shining example: I'm working on one right now, but I didn't post here until now.
Fear the wrath of PANTHER FLAUCLAWS VS. CRAFT!
Yeah, I'm off piecing frames together... There are 270 by now... And it's gonna be about twice as many...

Terry von Feledae
13-03-07, 22:20
I've used four different Programs now... MSPaint, Ulead Photoshop, Ulead GIF Animator LE and Jasc Animation Shop 3...
Don't ask why I need everything. Actually, I'd be just fine with only Gimp, but I don't know how to use it, so... I'll just use the other four programs now.

16-03-07, 22:12
That's it! I'm gonna enter this! Just for the heck of it!

Wait, is there a prize for wining? Or is the prize the fact that you're a total bad-ass at making animations?

Terry von Feledae
16-03-07, 22:30
I still don't know what the S-word is.

Novacrash
16-03-07, 22:50
Its The present tense of shat.

In other words its Shit. And yes you do have to capitalize the S or the link doesn't work.

16-03-07, 23:04
All you need are the sprite sheets and you are good to go! Ok every one, you got a challenger, lets see if anyone has the brains to give him some competition!

20-03-07, 23:14
I'm going to enter something for this; i think I'll stick to the MMZ series as that's what I'm comfortable with. I take it bittage mixing is TOTALLY out of the question? :P

Aikin
21-03-07, 00:31
You can actually do what you wish. If you feel that mixing 'bittage' is beneficial, than by all means you may go out and create a GIF based around that.

If you are really interested, the answer is in here on post #8:

So we can use other sprites? As long as we give credit, correct? So I can use sprite sheets from <http://www.sprites-inc.co.uk/files/EXE/> right?

Aikin
22-03-07, 03:14
You got it. Thus if you choose to use... lets say Dex and lord Wily as your two fighters, just give a link to the sheets you used like this:

Dex: http://www.sprites-inc.co.uk/files/EXE/Dex/Dekao_EXE1-3.gif

Lord Wily: http://www.sprites-inc.co.uk/files/EXE/Wily/Wily_EXE3.png

Its not supposed too, it is just an example. Although it is odd that the words have hyperlink text…

Don Kalypso
24-03-07, 03:07
Does the whole animation have to be a fight? As I kinda want to lead up to a fight, however short it may be, and then have an ending to it.

Also, how long does the fight have to be?

thecooltodd
24-03-07, 04:29
There is no given length for the fight... Don't make it long and boring and don't make it too short. (Duh)

Just a reminder, 12 days left. Let's see some action!
Maybe you should make it longer, it takes a while you know.

Terry von Feledae
27-03-07, 02:20
HELL YES!
I'm on vacation from saturday to the 8th, I CAN work there at my animation, but I can't submit it until I come back, means I have to do the other 100-200 Frames 'till Saturday... And since I can't do it all the time non-stop(This animation is starting to get on my nerves), it's actually possible that I can't make it before the timer expires. Even if you only make it a week or so longer, it would be awesome.

Don Kalypso
27-03-07, 02:38
I'm all for extending the timer, as I cannot obtain what I need to get to do my animation.

Worenx
27-03-07, 05:39
I'm all for extending the timer, as I cannot obtain what I need to get to do my animation.
Ditto. It takes a while to just animate things, and it takes an even longer time to do a good job. I mean: your contest, your rules, your deadline, but maybe an extension wouldn't be a bad idea.

goldberry
27-03-07, 13:21
Well if there is any plan of an extension, it could only help matters; meaning more competition and a better job done overall. Personally, mine's almost done, but if the deadline is increased I'll scrap my second one and start it again.

Aikin
27-03-07, 20:32
I'll see how things look at the dead line. If things are really bad, I'll give every one until April 14. If I do extend the dead line, I’m going to grade the animations harsher.

goldberry
27-03-07, 22:20
heh. Sound's fair enough; i can deal with that.

[fish in space]
28-03-07, 01:44
Here's what I've got so far... so it's not done.
http://img207.imageshack.us/img207/117/supahfightprotomz9.gif
It's almost 50 frames and counting. For my first actual fight animation it's pretty good if I do say so myself.

Zyros
28-03-07, 02:28
Not bad, but why does the pruple guy (forgot his name) dash a couple feet forward right into his slash?

[fish in space]
28-03-07, 02:31
Cause the variant is a moron with little or no AI.

Zyros
28-03-07, 02:32
You sure that it's not just an early mistake?

[fish in space]
28-03-07, 02:34
Yes, otherwise the slash would've missed. Besides, the variant had been standing around for long enough so he went towards his foe.

Zyros
28-03-07, 02:36
Alright, just checking...

TwIzTeR_91
28-03-07, 02:40
Well, it looks like it was a mistake you didn't feel like fixing, so I would suggest fixing it :) If I intend to say "good job" and say " Go Fuck yourself" it doesn't really matter what I intended. That's not how it looks.

[fish in space]
28-03-07, 02:48
No, I actually planned it that way. I considered having the slash shoot a beam but I figured the variant had been idle for too long anyway so I made him run.

TwIzTeR_91
28-03-07, 03:06
Right... You completely missed what I said. I'll put it more bluntly: It doesn't matter how you planned it. It looks like shit.

But On-Topic: When does this contest end again?

Aikin
06-04-07, 17:12
The contest ends the 7th. Yet, it can be extended to the 14th if things look bad, as they are now. (I have what...0 people who really entered after a whole month? ) But like I said, I'll grade things tougher if I extend the dead line.

Worenx
07-04-07, 04:51
I'm cutting it real close, but I'm finally at the final stage of this blasted animation! >< I'm pretty confident it'll be pretty good, even with the tougher grading scale. Good luck to all who are trying.

Edit @ 2:12 AM; April 7th
Finally got my entry finished. = =; I'm not too proud of the water though, but I'm sick of the animation now, so... - -;

I'm sorry Aikin, but I won't be able to finish my animation by the deadline. I'm moving into a new house, and I have to pack. *UGH!* MY internet will be down for a few days, starting Easter Sunday, and I don't know when it'll be back on. Wow Worenx that is good! Well, the water is like zipping back and forth, but except for that, it's smooth! I still need to practice alot more before making my sprites battle. My current avatar is fricken simple and took me 1 hours and 30 minutes to make it run smoothly. >_>

dualR
08-04-07, 10:34
Worenx I think you should get rid of the water animation all together, it looks rather half done right now. And right at the end, when Megaman has won there is a slight pause where Megaman just stands there before teleporting, the water stops moving all together =P

goldberry
08-04-07, 12:03
can't you move the water to the right slightly each time? Or do you have just two frames of the area?

Aikin
08-04-07, 13:15
It's because Wornex only has three frames of water movement...ow. This is why the water looks to shift back and forth. I'm not sure how he did it, but I would have cleared the river bed of water, and make a second 'water stream' sprite. (only of water) The 'water stream' would be a long sprite that looped twice. (or more) In other words, after cutting away the original and making it more like a pure water long tapestry, I would copy the 'water stream' and attach it to the end of the original. (of course, I would need to edit it to make it look nice.) After that I would take the background and move it across the 'water stream', making copies of stops along the way. (at a desired speed) That way, when I reach the end of the second half, the background will loop when I animated it.

Not the easiest thing to do, I know.

Blackhook

Avi's are generally easy, since you can only squeeze so much in 100 x 100 pixels. But either way, it's hard to just get even that to go smoothly. You did a good job on it. Battling is a little more complicated, but it can be done in a similar way as just standing there, like our avi's.

Worenx I think you should get rid of the water animation all together, it looks rather half done right now. And right at the end, when Megaman has won there is a slight pause where Megaman just stands there before teleporting, the water stops moving all together =P
I was actually considering that and going with Burnerman's stage as the BG, but I was about halfway through (300+ frames, man!) and I was getting mighty tired and wanted to get it done. Like Aikin said, it's not really easy to get it right, but I wanted to try. Maybe I'll spruce it up a bit in the future when I got the time. And yeah... about Megaman's pose?... HE CONTROLS WATER!!... WITH THE TWINKLE IN HIS MOUTH!! >.>; (Excuse xP)

Novacrash
10-04-07, 18:27
Doesnt anyone read the white text?

And, I never use backgrounds, too much of a hassle, makes it alot easy too position the sprites correctly too.

Taking out backgrounds cuts the time too make it by 50% which makes it two times longer if you spend the same amount of time, and a longer animation with no background is better then a short one with a bg in my opinion.

Terry von Feledae
10-04-07, 18:48
Both add to the polish.
I'm a little like Von Karma, if I do something, I want it perfect, even if it takes two years.
I do make a battle with a background; Without one, I'd be pretty lost... How could I line up my sprites without backgrounds?
(Oh, and I don't use fancy layering-programs unless for some special effects. It'd be too much work always to make a new Layer for everything)
If the polish, that what you get points in the contest is there, even an animation of 100 frames can be perfect. Take WorenX's, for example. It's quite short, but the water in the background(it's not perfect, but it still adds a really nice touch!), the custom sprites and everything make it still a really good animation, IMO.

Blackhook
10-04-07, 18:52

That's why you use layers, you just put a BG under all the layers when you've finished all your animating and positioning.

And without a BG you can't make all the fancy destructible terrain, every animation needs destructible terrain :P

EDIT: I miss my animation, stupid 115V/230V switch, it's all America's fault XD

Worenx
11-04-07, 06:15
Well, Nova, it's... okay. But it looks pretty rushed. The deadline has been extended; you have four more days. In four days, you can toss in a background; it's not at all hard. In fact, that's how I started mine: No backgrounds. And I used only Paint and MovieGear, so I didn't have access to layers and stuff like that. I used the "Print Screen" button and other Paint know-how to put that quick background under 9 frames at a time. It took me two days to do that to a 300+ frame animation. So you'll be able to do it in much less with your amount of frames.

Also, the animations of the sprites are very much incomplete. The shots, the movements; it's just too fast. I only see a few frames for each of their animations, where it'll normally take like 4-5 frames. Make the fight longer, and make sure things animate smoothly. That's all I'll say.

Download (http://www.wikiupload.com/download_page.php?id=125476)
Yep, download. HUGE filesize. At least for a GIF. Link is at the very bottom, below the ads.
Frames: 484
Time needed: About 20 hours
Sprites, backgrounds, etc.: Here (http://img246.imageshack.us/img246/3688/anibrbsp6.png)
Comment: NEVER AGAIN. I just can't work under pressure(Time). Still, it turned out pretty good, and I implemented such things as slow-motion, fading, atomic explosions, falling giant rocks, and everyone dieing. I hope you'll like it.

AddIt: A little tip, don't watch it directly from the download-site. It's laggy, and kinda un-fun. Instead, open the window with the animation, right-click on it, save it on your computer, and watch it from there. It's better, I'm serious.

Daaaaaaaamn! (http://img410.imageshack.us/img410/9399/responseni4.jpg)

Talk about above and beyond the call of duty! Dude! Terry! That is AWESOME! I love the ending! xD

BTW: I'm holding a white flag in the pic I drew, but I'm not forfeiting. xP That is seriously my initial response to this kickass animation.

Omg Terry. Are you sure you're human?

Afterall I think the rest of the mavericks were kind of irresponsible except for the turtle guy... Can I use those "Extremely damaged" Craft sprites?

Thank you guys! I've put a lot of work into this, and I'm really glad I didn't do it without a purpose...

@WorenX: But I want to draw that good!

@ZetaZero: Uh, actually, I'm a reploid.
Just kidding. Did'cha believe me!?
Of course they were. They're Mavericks after all. I mean, 4 of those 8 are extremely laid back and wouldn't do a shit for anything besides blowing stuff up, one of those and another one are dead, one was too big to fit into the window so I didn't implement him, one of them doesn't give a shit about Craft and only wants his revenge on Zero... Leaves only the turtle guy.
Of course, you can use anything on the sheet, although I don't think anyone will find much use for anything but the battered sprites and the destroyed background...

I would like to congratulate every one who entered, pat the back of every one who attempted, and mock those who said they would enter but never did. Alright, so how about we get down business of those who wholly entered; Worenx and Terry F. (You other guys, sorry you never supplied the sprite sheets. I KNEW some people would ignore that part.)

[Worenx]

Action- 10/20

Sprites- 17/20

Steadiness- 19/20

Originality- 5/20

Bonus- +4/-4

Overall: 51

Comments: Pretty simple and strait forward. Woodman drops down and Mega beats the hell out of him. While I’m impressed with the speed some times it is too fast. Like when Woody chucks Mega, or Woodman’s Leaf shield, or the end of the sword combo… Simple put, just because you can go a million miles per hour, does not mean you should all the time. It just seems a little tough to distinguish what’s going on. Now, I was impressed with the animated background and some of the moves, that’s why you got a 4.(Might have been a 8 or 10 if the background looked nice) but you lost it because you have that bomb hanging up in the air and it just looked way out of place. Not only that, but the attacks seem to lack some strength. Unlike hand drawn animation, most sprites need that extra push to show the guy is getting knocked around. With little knock back or added ‘particle’ effects, the attacks seem to have little ‘umf’.

Action- 10/20

Sprites- 19/20

Steadiness- 6/20

Originality- 18/20

Bonus- +5/-10

Overall: 48

Comments: You started out very strong and ended very weak. The sprites were also quite shaky, Not bad lag shaky, but it looks like these guys seem have a vibrator stuck some where. Which would have not been much if it only happened one in a while, but the shakiness was through out the animation. Action was good…ish. The scenes could have been better if the fights in them were a bit longer with less interference. Also, a few attacks seemed like they lack distinguishably. (Why did the panther’s arm fly off again? ) The last scenes were pretty boring; both guys pull off their biggest attacks, one gets buried in rubble, but oh, what’s that?! A grenade! For some reason it feels like I’ve seen it all too often before.
I know the last part was supposed to be funny or entertaining, but it wasn’t. Although the whole ‘chase’ idea would have been cooler if they fought on the move, but how it now is ok. You got some bonus because of the scrolling and scene changes, but the weak ending and pointless chatter dragged you down.

========

Well, the winner is Worenx with 51 points out of a possible 110! If I was kinder, Terry might have taken it, but since I said I was going to grade tougher, and I was not going to turn a blind eye to anything.
Ok! Now with the power invested in me by the state of New Jersey, I declare Worenx the Czar of Animation on the Spritec.Inc forum! Also, Worenx, if you want anything in my Sig space you may use it freely for a whole week.
By the power invested in me by the state of New Jersey, I declare Terry F. the Thane of Animation on the Sprites.Inc forum!

Of course, those titles and the unused Ronin of Animation are up for grabs the next time I have the contest. Alright, that’s it, every one can go home!

Wait, wait, wait. Doesn't Sprites Inc. work on GMT timeframes??? That means we still have another five hours and ten minutes to enter!

EDIT: Bah. Mine wasn't that good anyway. Congrats, Worenx.

Congratulations, Worenx. Looks like you're still better than me...
I think I lack practice... And I learnt that dialogue hasn't to do anything in fighting animations. Well... Yeah. I'm gonna kill myself now, that's all.

Damn it , if i haven´t those stupid Virus and Gimp problems ... but still congrats Worenx and i hope for a Round Two, Now i gonna kick some ass...

Worenx

oo; Well, this was a surprise. ^^;; I thought even with the tougher grades, Terry would still win. >.>; Thought wrong, I guess... Terry, if it's any consolation, I think you should've won.

As for sig space, I don't need anything. This was just to help me get a basic gist of how animations work, since I'm working on a newer version of Worenx that animates fully. It did help too, so I'm gonna continue with my new sprites. Make a round two, Aikin. xD That way, I can get my arse kicked really bad from spite. xP

Sue? That better be a typo. o.o;

Unfreez (http://www.whitsoftdev.com/unfreez/) is a good program, as it's fairly simple to use.

Why isn't this locked yet? The contest finished a while ago or am I missing something?
