This is a sprite if Zero (duh). It is done in the style of a unknown-bit fighting game. Feel free to critique. These are ALL NON-PD SPRITES.

It's a nice sprite, a really nice one, but I agree with what's 'is face (Just kidding Twister... sorta). The sabre doesn't look like it could possibly exist is physics. Try making the hilt attach to the blade more like a beamsword in Halo2. Or something, that's just an example. Also, the shading on the bracelets is off. His face looks a bit odd, but don't make that a priority
I see what you mean by the sword is off. The edge wouldn't go transparent for me. It also needs to be longer, the hilt is about as big as the sword itself. I think I forgot to shade the bracelet. Update coming soon.
Try making the hilt attach to the blade more like a beamsword in Halo2.
All the details I've used were from official artwork, I don't wanna stray too far from the original concept.

I like the head and hair a lot.
However, with the arms behind her torso and the extra definition on her crotch, she kind of looks like she's doing pelvic thrusts at me. Sorry.

This is Shinobu Benihime, he is going to be the main character for the fighting game I am trying to create for my game development class.
New Sprite. This is Maehara. She is Shinobu's lover, I am going to make a larger sprite of her later, this is a smaller one. I repeat that ALL my sprites are NON PD!

She looks very well done and seems to be in the style of a Disgea (sp?) character, although I'm not sure about the size of her feet (it could be the reason that she's tip toeing that makes them like so small) other then thats its an awesome job!
Good job catching on, her face is a frankenstein from Etna. The rest is scratch though.

Yes shes from Disgaea: Hour of Darkness, a game for the PS2 thats some sort of isometric RPG turn based thing, thats as much I know about it.

Yeah, I have some work to do as I need to make it bigger so I can use it. As of right now it's far too small.

I've decided to shrink the sprites down and not use oversized sprites for my fighting game. It's Shinobu Benihime, the same guy I did the mugshot of earlier.

I think he isn't loose enough. Like he isn't in constant motion or jumpingish. When you're fighting someone, you wouldn't want to be uptight. I think his movement needs to be looser, more relaxed, and more constant. Do you get what I mean?
I'm with Twizter. His movements need to be constant and fluid. As they are, they're jerky and rigid.
Hmm...I should prolly add more frames and speed it up some, that might help with the rigidness of it.
Also, make it so he doesn't pause. he stops for a fraction of a second at the top and bottom of the sword thing.
Yeah, I did that on purpose. I'll see how it looks without the pause and decide afterwards.

Yeah cutting the pause makes it look pretty bad. He looks more like he is having a spaz attack than watching his enemy.

Ok, instead of making up some more idle sprites, I am just going to give him a reason to look like a newbie swordsman. His story is that he is normally a peaceful man that refuses to fight. When his younger sister is kidnapped by a mysterious man, he decides to take up a weapon and go after him and save his sister.
EDIT: Maybe I'll make some sprites later, and make it so that as you progress through the game, you get more moves, and his stance begins to get more professional. How does that sound?

That sounds pretty good. And it makes sense. Like you said, he's doesn't like to fight, which could imply that he's somewhat steady in his stances. However as you progress through the game, the character "matures."
I was also going to go and make it so that as you progress throught the story, he learns new moves. Such as the cliche'd energy blast from the sword. And a Multistab, who knows I might just turn this into a platform game instead of a fighter. Prolly be more fun too.
Ok I have gone and Updated the standing animation. Tell me what you think.

Given that his story is just an excuse to make less sprites, I'm going to ignore it. :P
The first thing I notice, is that his hair needs to move. It should go up when he rises on his toes and down AFTER his heels go down. This does mean he'll have more frames.
If you really want to look cleaver, you can have him making small jumps forward and back. But, doing this means his hair has to move accordingly. Also, you'll have to move his knees a little more. Jumping properly means you use your knees.
Another thing you can consider doing is moving his chest armor when he jumps. If it's loose, it should be a little. It could be worth experimenting over.
Finally, I'm not a big fan of shading a sword so that the center basically radiates out lighter shades. You can counter this by giving the blade some kind of AA outline. If you do it right, you can make it shine while he bounces.
Overall, this is pretty good. I'd like to see what you can do with an attack.

I wouldn't need to make more frames, just edit the ones I do have. I chose to go dark then light, because it's something different that you don't see. His chest armor is a tight fitting cloth shirt, so it's not going to bounce.

Looks like it should look good animated. I just now noticed that I dont really likle the shading on the sword, but whatever. Looks good from here.
Well I think you should use some more poses, and it looks like he is just moving his legs, not walking. But it would be easier to rate of somebody made a animated gif of him..
It's supposed to be more of a sliding of the feet, not so much walking. Think creeping towards the enemy. I'll get an animation up after I get done with my class.

I think that... the feet are moving too fast for it to really be a "Sneak", i think you should make it go a bit slower, almost as if sidling (Sp?) across a small ledge by a wall.

His legs look to short.
HIS EYES! THEY ARE WHITE!
The sword looks like being in his arm.

Its fine, dont change anything. Just make a sprite to go between his "idle" pose to the "item" pose.
I think his hand looks wierd. The one he's holding in the air, I mean. It's probably the shading.
Remember, he is wearing a glove, and I did only give him 3 fingers and a thumb.
I had not realized it was a glove. That in mind, it looks alright.

I'm quite impressed that his hair can stay perfectly still when he runs, most people can't defy physisics like that. :P Even then, his leg movement is pretty poor. He's not useing his knees at all or joints in his feet, which is one problem. And the other is that his pelvis is moving a fair amount, but his chest is staying still. You should have his arms move up and down, and turn his pelvic area in the same direction as his chest, then have him do a side step. That way, it won't look so odd. Right now he's way too stiff.
Also, his black and red shades could use more contrast between them. It clashes pretty bad with the contrast you have in the hair and skin tones.
Aside from not likeing the shading on the sword, (becasue it doesn't really give me a sence of depth), you should avoid useing pure white or pure black.
And I think you would have more frames in the ready stance if you made his hair move correctly. We're not going to actually find out though until you do it. :P
The newest pose isn't too bad, but I dislike how is face is in that angle. Largly because there's no depth to it; it's like a round ball right now. He'd probably also look better with some shading on the sides of his legs too.
But, that's it. While there aren't bad sprites, they're not great sprites. There's just room for improvement, and I get the sence you're being lazy in some of the poses. :P Scratch spriting can be impressive if you don't get lazy about it. But, keep going. It's definitly nice to see something non-Megaman related.
You hit it on the head exactly. Most of the time I work on these, is right after class or work. Give me till this weekend, and I'll work on it.

I gave him a ground to walk on (despite it's just one color). This might make it easier to tell what he is doing.

Mikado's Kirby Zero, gave me an idea for an animation. It's isn't finished yet. I want to use Mikado's Kirby sprites, but alas I must wait for permission.
EDIT: It may seem slow at first, let it play through once and it will be at the speed I set it at.

well, the sprite looks really good, but a few things. First, is it scratch? and what style is it? and last, I think her left leg looks a bit too skinny, maybe give it a bit more size?
Nope it's not scratch. It's in Jump Superstars style (that was the base style). Yeah I could bulk it up some.

Not much actually done to the sprite. I completly overhauled the hair, changed her clothes to reflect a school girl look. The original sprite had ALOT of stray pixels of bright pink, corrected that as well. C+C and Rating Please. Might get a full sheet done by tomorrow. Won't post it here though. Only shown by request.

Nope, those are actually full scratch boots. The character is my World of Warcraft character, Maehara. It's all based on his actual gear he is wearing. And yeah, I'm gonna take one off.

Um, since this is a scratch sprite, I'm not sure this might apply, but his legs are very pillowy.
What do you mean by pillowy?
Pillow-shaded means that the light source is coming from us and that's a big no.
