Well, I wanna post a couple of sprites I've been working on. I'm relatively new at spriting, and suck gorribly at pixel art. But I have developed a secret new way of creating high-res sprites fairly easy!
Anyway, this is the very first sprite I made, tell me if it's any good So I'll know whether to pursue spriting any further, even though I will despite your comments. This is a custom virus I made, known as a Turtispear!

Well?

His head looks a bit flat on the sides (Unless that was the point). I suggest that you add highlights on the top part of the head and shading on the bottom part to give the sprite a rounded look.

You mean something like this?

Nice. What attacks does he have?

Basically, he opens his mouth and shoots a barrage of spears, I'll have the finished sheet up soon.

Hey dude, isn't that the turtle virus you made?
EDIT/SP: Pay no attenion to the topic named "Darkness' sprites"!

Next virus, a virus called Circus Wheel!
http://images5.pictiger.com/thumbs/c3/45f572888e9cba8342b77467f554d4c3.th.png
Turtlespear is nice looking but the wheel is very strange.

Woo! I got an animation of circus wheel!

I'll work on more of his frames!

Did you just rotate it in like photoshop or something? It looks like it blurs. It's a good concept, but it doesn't seem to be in the BN style. Good sprite though.

the turtle is a great companion to the fish arrow and clam needle series. :g-neko:
as for the circus wheel, its all right, but its not very EXE-ish, like Twiz said.
Amen.
These sprites don't seem to be the BN style.

I guess CircusWheel didn't "roll over" well with you guys! XD
Anyway, I gots two more viruses to post.
A virus called boxer:
http://images5.pictiger.com/thumbs/a9/0272a939554cf32df89fd0adf7c47ca9.th.png
now a virus called Cruncher:
http://images5.pictiger.com/thumbs/0a/c8f4d60a1182aa260b8634fa12b88f0a.th.png
Now tell me what you guys think of these two. I'll update them as more frames are created.

Still not BN style. They look like they were made with Photoshop? Or some other program that isn't paint. The edges blend too well, its not like a sprite it's more like... Small digital art. Good concepts, designs, and artwork, but as for calling them sprites? I'm not so sure.

I don't know what's worse,the joke,or the fact that's it's not exe style...

Make the outlines less anti-aliased, and reduce the pallete even further (16 colours maxium) and you'll get the EXE style. That's my suggestion.
Y'know your shark-like Boxer Virus? It looks very, very familiar to your Maverick Pirhana. It wouldn't take too much to convert it into that Maverick, really.
The Turtle virus thing kinda reminds me of something from Super Mario RPG.
Other than what was already suggested and such, I think the sprites look pretty darn good for first attempts. Really, you shoulda seen some of my first attempts at spriting... good god.
Wow really cool viruses maybe you should try a navi next
These are neat sprites. I like how the shark with a big mouth is named "Boxer" but the virus with boxing-type arms is named "Crusher." This was a joke right? Or did I just notice that on accident?
Anyhoo! I can just see them hovering in their little squares, while Mega Man uses battle chips.

Ok, I made a BIG mistake with those viruses. I mixed their names up!
The piranha-ish one is actually Cruncher, and the Boxer guy is actually Boxer.
@Quickman:
Yeah, I noticed the similar designs too.
I was thinking of using Cruncher as an enemy in Crunch Piranha's stage since everyone hates him as an EXE virus. I guess he's more suited for the X series.
But from what I've been hearing, these viruses aren't total flops. They seem.....too advanced for the EXE series. so as such, Cruncher will now be a X machine that thrives in the waters of Crunch Piranha's stage.
@Ace:
what do you mean by anti-aliasing? If that's the case, I'd go and do that...
@Everyone else:
Please bear with me here, these are my first sprites and I believe they are quite good. You guys seemed to love my Turtispear virus the most. So that one is a shoe-in for my game then. Try to help me out by telling me what the other three are missing....
also note that these sprites were HAND-DRAWN. That means I drew them on paper, scanned them, colored, and resized. No pixelling done whatsoever. I don't recomend this technique though, unless you're good at drawing like I am. People like Quickman should have no trouble though.
Thanks for listening.

Sorry, I don't mean to bump, but I got Turtispear's sheet up and finished. I've never felt more prouder!

The blue head looks... odd. Perhaps you should change the color of the body?

Ok, I've made yet another new sprite. This is a virus called WizIce. There are two more, but they're just recolors and are known as WizFire, WizWood, and WizThunder.
Anywho, maybe this guy will be more accepted than the boxer, cruncher, wheel viruses.

Think I did a better job?

Decent sprite, but not in the MMBN style.

I finished another complete sheet. This another virus called a Froggun.
Here you go:
http://i10.photobucket.com/albums/a110/kingofanime/FroggunSheet.png
If it's not in th BN style please tell me what's wrong with it. Too many colors? Too little colors? The way it looks? Something?
Just saying it's not in the style doesn't help me, I need to know specifically what's wrong with it! At least I'll always have Turtispear to bank on....
Rainbow Dash
21-05-06, 21:07
Well, MMBN sprites aren't my area of expertise, but I'll try.
1. The angle of alot of them. It's from the side, and the MMBN style has the camera looking down on them a little.
2. Size. Way to big. Shrunken down, the wizard might fit.
3. Not good with the specifics of BN shading, but it doesn't seem to fit with that style.
Not sure if this makes sense, but some parts seem too... thick for the MMBN style.
4. Ay lieks teh pudning!
alittle to cartoonish not spritish.
Don't seperate everything with blacklines
The Wizard sprite looks awesome! But that frog is nowhere near BN style.
Rainbow Dash
22-05-06, 01:34
By the way, what's up with the Wizard's right hand? It has a squiggley line for an arm.
kingofanime
23-05-06, 19:18
That wasn't a squiggly line, the hand just got too close to the body, they ar efree floating.
Ok, I redid WizIce a little bit. Tell me if he meets the size requirement!
http://www.phosted.com/x5/WizIce.gif
again, comments are welcome and they only help me to improve. I'll conquer the EXE style of spriting yet!

23-05-06, 19:20
Well, one things for sure, they still don't look like MMBN sprites.
It looks more like Megaman fell into an art program and had to fight various drawings. There is one thing I see: very little shading.
The Ice Wizard I can see working for BN, but it needs shaded. Heavily shaded. Grab some BN enemy spritesheets for style and shading reference, that should help.
I seriously think you should turn your pirhana virus into you pirhana Maverick. They're so similar, and it won't take too much to add onto the existing sprite.

Naah, I already am working on Crunch Piranha's sprite.
Trust me,when you see it, You'll be glad you did! Of course, feel free to demonstrate what you mean.....I like references.

UPDATE Time!
I worked on my first Navi, Say hello to RailManEXE!
The frame on the left was done by SC, The hurt form was done by me. I'm making the rest of the sheet myself so don't worry. I hope you love him...or he'll charge at you!

Shading is much closer! Keep working at it! And work on that headpiece. It doesn't look quite right... It looks not straight.

Interesting Navi; when I first saw it I thought "What the? ... ChargeMan.EXE???"
kingofanime
02-06-06, 12:30
Well, the original design for him was supposed to be my version of what chargeman would look like integrated into the EXE series. Then BN6 came out and they seriously raped his design so bad. Given this, I had to change the name of my navi, but it's ok, my design is SO much better.
And the headpiece......since pixels are square there was no easy way to do that from a slanted angle....

In my opinion, the smokestack should be skinnier and a bit smaller. It should match the smokestack in the standng pose at least in size.

Well they are looking like sprites now... but still the shading is looking like done with a pencil...
I like how it looks all cartoony, great job, 9/10

Better. They're starting to look more like sprites now. My only issue is that you should switch the orange-ish color with the red and vice versa. Th ered is considered the "lighter" color, thus it's used for that patch (the highlight) on the left side of his waist.
Try to match the pallete I used with Railman's standing sprite.

Ok, A bit of an update. I got another frame finished of RailMan as well as fixed a slight coloring issue.

Probably not perfect yet, but pretty darn close!
