Seriously? No CGI? Only crap, that's gotta be the first fil;m not to use CGI for Special effects in...quite a few years at least.

I miss the days when film studios used anything and everything for special effects. Hell, did you see how they did E.T walking? They hired a kid that wasn't born with any legs to wear a rubber suit.

Nowadays with movies there is only one solution to everything: get some blokes to sit in front of a PC and animate it in 3D. There's no fun anymore.

Oh, and GG, where did you hear these details about the new Dark Crystal? Like it having puppets and all?

Been following Power Of The Dark Crystal (as Dark Crystal 2 isn't a very good title) for a while.

Easily one of my fave movies (along with Labrynth!).
Although, while I love the film, it is great for comedy value when with friends.
Primary examples
- "HMMMMMMMMMMMM!"
- The incomprehensably slow speeds of the Mystics. Me and Tom were in stitches when they came in right at the end of the movie when the crystal has been fixed really slowly. "Did we miss anything?"

Little known fact- Did you know only 13% of EVERYTHING that is Dark Crystal (That's characters, places, ideas, thingies, plots, etc) made it into the movie? I know it's only a kids movie, but it's as though they created an entire world only for themselves, and showed us but a glimpse of it.
Which begs the question- Why didn't they make a series? :p

And while on the subject of special effects- Look at John Carpenters old horror movies.
Best example- The Thing.
That shit's just cardboard, paper mache, and whatever other shit they found, and yet the ressucitation rib mouth arm dismemberment, still makes me cringe!
Then you look at these modern films with CGI :(

Only brilliant use of CGI gore ever (that I can think of off the top of my head) = The CGI blood in the last Zatoichi movie.
It looks weird as hell, but brilliant in a way.

And back to topic- You can pick up the Labrynth/Dark Crystal/Mirrormask box set for like £20 at Music Zone.
Mirromask isn't too good, but who cares? You get Labrynth and Dark Crystal on special edition! Puppets! Music! Awesome effects! David Bowie's totally inescapable package in those bloody skintight pants! (AGRHAGRH!)

Last time i heard animatronics and puppeterring have taken a big step in which they could pose as a rival to CGI.

So yeah good news. Mind you if i animate (again) i might try to make the quality look like something from the 70s or Don Bluth, complete with a classical orchestra of those days!

PS: I thought the CGI in Beat Takeshi's Zatoichi could have been better but it didn't stop me from thoroughly enjoying that flick.

That film could have been in Arameic with no subtitles, and I would have still loved it.
